Substrate Mixture
    #410336 - 10/01/01 05:21 PM (23 years, 11 days ago)

I have two targets to knock off with this post.
1) first, would anyone happen to know the shelf-life of vermiculite.
2) secondly, would anyone either direct me to a source or give me your more valuable first-hand information on the comparative pros and cons of vermiculite and perlite. Aside from the conventional means of vermiculite, I've come across the technique of spreading a half inch of it, dry, on the surface of a 1/2 pint rice cake in order to prevent contamination while still administering gas exchange to the cultivating mycelium. I was curious as to other pluses of either vermiculite or perlite or really any other ingredient that anyone may be experienced or experimenting with.
I'm sure care, technique, and climate, etc. vary for different strains, so my inquiries adhere to the P Cubensis B+ strain mostly if it helps. Any reply is much appreciated.

1) Verm lasts forever.
2) A dry vermiculite layer atop your substrate is invaluble for preventing contaminations.
3) Perlite is a fool proof method for humidifying a terrarium.
