This is done often, but everyone gets different results. That is why there is no clear cut answer. Its whatever works for you..

I'm going to say the batch that was soaked and simmered will yield the best. Who knows, though!

soaking is to ensure that the endospores on the wbs germinate and are susceptible to the effects of the PC.
this is accepted as common knowledge, but i have never actually expirimented with not soaking.
your results should be interesting.
thanks for taking the time to log your results.

They all look good. Someone told me not to do WBS in 1/2PTS because it doesn't shake well. PFFT! I wonder if they even have tried that!! Because when I did it.. it worked perfectly well. Good luck brotha.. looks like we're about the same way along. This is also my first experiment with WBS.

you "should" shake the jars, but your using half pints. if you were using quarts id say to fill the jars 2/3rds to 3/4ths so thares room to shake. i say leave the jars as cakes since shaking wont do much of anything.

Looking good   Those are some well used jars.  Do I see screws on the lid?  And did you shake the jars?

you should have done a jar that wasnt simmereed or soaked, just pc'ed. That is what we need to know

I think the reason for such variation in results with WBS is because of variation in composition of the WBS.

I just recently had a simular experience with the WBS. It seems to expand a 10/15% after it has been PC'd if there is any kind of moister left in the jars.

I honestly think all of the different results people get is because there are so many different varrieties of WBS. I went to home depo and they had 8 different varieties all with different kinds of seed.
