quick oven pastuerization Q
    #4102085 - 04/27/05 11:02 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

why doesn't anyone oven past. w/ jars? i was thinking about just loading my pinters up w/ like a 3:1 shit:verm ratio, sticking the thermometer through a decent size hole in the top of one, the rest could be just tyvek'd to keep them clean and i'm sure would stay about the same temp on the top rack of the oven. anyone ever tried this? it would make it real easy for me to do a 50% spawn:bulksub. if i have a bunch of 1/2 pints colonized and can just do mini casing of 2 pints spawned w/ 2 half pints, thanks all

the reason why is the amount of moisture you have to account for beforehand.
you can do it; my guess is that it would take some time getting your water ratio right.

even if you decide to do it in the oven, i think i'd still reccomend an ovenbag. you shouldn't have any trouble eyeballing what 50% of the volume is (by the way, i'd reccomend a lesser spawn ratio.)

so u think that a lot more moisture (compared to using spawnbags, which i do also have) will leave jars compared to bags?

i like using bags alright but i figured jars would make things a lot easier for me, as well as give me a lot faster colonization, seeing as i would be spawning at 50%

and to repeat, has anyone acutally tried this that could give me some info?

thanks for the response psilo

If it was simple and efficent everyone would be doing it. Stick to a pressure cooker.

normally i would stick to the PC, but w/ shit i'd like to keep it simple and past. to keep sterilization easy... i hear if you PC a bulk sub it's more prone to contams (the helpful bacteria are killed, blah blah blah)

i guess i'll ask another couple Q's
1. if i PC some shit, isn't my water content going to be screwed up anyway, same as if i oven past?
2. i do open air spawning (i get in a clean room w/ clean stuff, open jars and mix well, cover and incubate, etc)- am i going to have a lot of probs spawning to sterilized shit? right now i'm working at like a 95% success rate, rarely getting contams every couple months, thanks for the help all!

Dont PC it either. I think that was thinking your doing grains. In a PC though, its a water based heat device. Thats why we use it, water wont be able to excape from the jars. The oven, would cook it right out of it though, its a dry heat. You can oven pasteurize, you just need to do bags that are sealed, or do it in a pan covered with foil, to keep the water in.

I believe the jars would seal. When you do bags in the oven, you still need it to be slightly unsealed. I guess in jars covered tightly with foil would work fine. When you do bags, you wrap them up with a rubberband, but not fully tight, until you remove them from the oven and they start to cool. I'm pretty sure the tin foil would work fine over it though since alot do pans covered in tin foil (I've done that once myself actually)

dood its prety clear that you're going to at least try it. i say do it with a pint jar or two, leave the rest to go with what you/we/they know. that way if it fails no biggie, if it works you can come back with pics and go "neener-neener!"

Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

i would use foil, no holes. you want to retain that water.

pretty sure that this would sterilize the casing material and not pasteurize it.

there is helpful bacteria which is present after pasteurization, but not sterilization.

sok-
i would reccomend pasteurization in water, in a bag, and not in the oven.

have you seen doin da h-poo?

indeed i have, but i find it soo much easier and faster to past in the oven... that way i don't have to mess w/ huge culdrons of water, the physical aspect of past. w/ water, etc.

my procedure is: 1. preheat oven to 300 and lay out tin foil on top rack 2. (w/ poo/straw already hydrated, aged, leeched, etc.) stick bags in oven w/ therm. in place in one bag (probe in center of substrate) 3. hit 170 for an hour or more

hopefully my poojar deal works out pretty simple so i can write up and have my own tek

another thing i just thought of now would be past. sealed jars in a pot w/ water on the stove... easy temp control, plenty of pots and jars, and that even seems like a better idea than in the oven for jars at least
