Transportable Outdoor Wood Lover Beds Made Easy!!!! PICS!!! Update 4/26
    #4096111 - 04/25/05 04:51 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I have always liked the idea of outdoor woodlover tubs but thought they might stand out a little bit and the posibility of them not fruiting due to humidity bothers me. Its too dry here to worry about humidity. Here is an idea i had.
Get a pot, a big pot and a shade loving plant. Here we have an azalea and a big ass pot.

Fill you pot and add your plant. Leave enough space on top to give yourself a 6-8 mulch layer.

Get your wood lover spawn ready, here we have shiitake.

Here we have about 1/2 inch of spawn, colonized sawdust:bran.

Now we added another inch of sawdust and wood chips. I will top it off in a day or two once i pick up a bag of fir chips. I couldnt wait to post the tek so i did it now.

Here is the mulch right out of the bag.

The Pot half way full with chips. I will top it off in 2 weeks once this has colonized and i have given them a stir.

With luck there should be some shiitakes  once the weather changes

the top layer is dry. If i was spawning the whole thing then i would use wet chips. Since the spawn is being left at the bottom, the chips down there will be wet. As i water and ad more chips lets say the chips 1-2 inches under the surface will not dry out. This will keep the chips on top from catching a contam.

did u sterilize or pasteurize the soil for the plant? Also I was thinking since that layer will always be moist I would think the soil will stay moist always which could equal fungus for the soil and root rot for the plant if it doesn't like all the moisture. Im just wondering about all this cause I think I might do that shiitakes are good eats.

just used striahgt out of the bag soil, No need to pasterize for outdoor stuff. Im not worried about root rot, i think everything will be just fine

sounds logical. i share that good feeling.

Under his instruction, I taped drumsticks to his head and turned him into a sort of mummy, or perhaps a caterpiller in a cocoon. He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

Yeah man awesome ideas. I was messing around thinking I could do some outdoor cubensis and I tried to get some cubes to grow the same way, on a much smaller scale. I took this water loving plant and innoc'd the top 3/4inch with colonized grains then cased the top with coir.

I was hoping the plant would help with humidty, gas exchange and shade for outdoors. It was only 9-10 grains of spawn and a much smaller scale though. Just in the open air. I posted that a while back and someone made fun of me pretty bad saying I was an idoit to think plants could assist mushrooms in growing. Well we'll see this winter now wont we?

Every time I found P. subaeruginosa shroomies here in Sydney they were hiding underneath tiny little green shrubbery. I would say that plants can definitely help a lot through preventing moisture loss and maintaing good conditions for pinhead formation.
