Bulk: Incubate or not?
    #4101314 - 04/27/05 02:51 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

my question is for bulk casings of 10 lbs poo spawned with about three quarts of wbs. i have seen people post on here that you don't need to incubate casings this size and that if they are in a room at 75 they will warm themselves to a core temperature of 83. also, some people have posted that if you do incubate a bulk casing it will cause its core temperature to rise too high. so to anyone with bulk exp, do you incubate your bulk casings?

I incubate my straw/dung substrates, but I don't use near the size you are doing. It would be interesting to partially insert a thermometer in your substrate to monitor the temps.

At a room temp of 75F, it will do fine by itself, so long as it is in total darkness.

Yea, incubate them.  Mycelia really doesn't produce THAT much heat. i've used candy thermometers and the temps rise a few degrees above ambient, maybe 2-3degreesF  Incubate them bad boys and watch 'em take off

on 10lbs of poo in a room with the temp around 75 degrees and in an insulated container...the core temp of the substrate will probly be around 84 degrees.
I always have a thermometer in my substrates when doin bulk to make sure the temp is in the right range.
Side note.
When i take the same container with 10lbs in it and plate it ontop of my closed TiT (just sit it on the lid). The temperature creeps up to around 90. (TiT is set to 82-84)
I would not recomend incubating your bulk. And i would always listen to what agar says too.

Now with smaller bulk runs <5lbs i do find that they need a little help to keep that core temp at 84. This is when i place ontop of my TiT.

Hope that helps

Agar, even the entire casing phase will be fine as long as it's total darkness? I am paranoid about casing colonization after the bad times I've had with it.
