your graphic card manufacturer's website and/or manual. your card must support it, of course.

There is a device that I have installed for a client that takes a single video signal and splits it into two (or four) signals. It looks like a KVM switch, but without the KM and switch parts. I think the cost was around $75, much cheaper than a dual head graphics card. (The box also amplifies the signal so you can run monitors that are in different rooms.) Sorry, don't remember who made it or what it was called... all I know is that it exists.

yeah we have something similar at school but does what your talking about support dual monitor desktop or does it just produce an exact replica of the other monitor? the one's i've seen just display the samething on multiple monitors.

for dual if your running windows is just two vid cards...it is much better to have two seprate because then one is not trying to do twice the work. you need one vga if you have that and one pci or two if you dont have vga.

nah 2 vid cards would be a bad idea, no one has 2 agp and not many have sli PCI-e yet. it would be stupid to buy PCI video cards and i doubt many of them support dual monitors anyway. besides with the graphic cards they have out now, two (2d) desktop environments wouldn't stress the card much. thinking about it i don't really think it's even feasible.

Replica only... I hadn't considered the wanting extra desktop space that the dual headed cards give you.
In the "old days" we used to be able to put both an MGA and VGA card in a computer at the same time. This was great for debugging games and graphics applications... you could have the VGA side work as normal and write all your debug messages to the MGA side without screwing up the VGA sides display.

funny, i can think of little use for display replication. having more screen real estate, otoh, can be a godsend. depending on what you do it can actually decrease efficiency by introducing distractions. most, if not all, modern OS (doze, osx, *nix) are dual display capable given a dual-head card with working drivers. IOW, a little research pays off if you intend to implement such a configuration.

Matrox Graphics specialises in dual-monitor vid-cards. I've used the Millenium G400 for some years now, and it's been a very good card.....

i'd get a 6600gt if you were going to get a new card that supports dual dvi (or vga) if you wanna keep the cost down, or get a 6800gt if you don't mind the price. mine is so good it almost makes me forget it was near $400. the 6600gt is like $190 i think but has sli capablities if you have a pci-e slot, and can run everything out today pretty smooth with the quality cranked up.

The one I installed was on a megayacht. They had a computer system dedicated to navigation with all the GPS info, charts, etc in it and wanted the display from that computer to show up in the staterooms so that the owner/guests could see where they were without having to bug the captain all the time.
