Salvia leaves going purple/brown!
    #4100644 - 04/26/05 11:15 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

My Salvia (divinorum) leaves are starting to turn a purplish brown color starting from the center of the leaf and permiating outward. Does anyone else have this problem or know what it might be? It is only happening to some leaves. Maybe its the fertilizer that I just put on. Any help woule be great.

Peace

It sounds to me as if your Salvia is receiving too much sunlight. Plants often turn brown in response to increased sunlinght. I think that this is because they produce extra pigments to mop up the ultraviolet radiation. You will often see it when you place cactus seedlings in too much sunlight initially - they go bronze or reddish.

You should probably shade the plant a bit better then.

Are they getting full sun? They need like full shade, plant them under some shrubs or taller plants.

What? I got a cutting form a big patch and braught it down to a lower elevation. And in my experience they do like lots of sun. Not full but lots.

I am thinking that the overexposure to the sun is what was causing the problem.

It sound like a light problem to me. I have had this happen when putting it under flouros from being outside. It turned very dark purple. Even some of the leaves that dried out were dark red. If you move it back to less light it should recover, but you may lose a lot of the purple leaves.
