Fruiting chamber cleaned today. I f'in hate mold...
    #4100021 - 04/26/05 07:59 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So I discovered there was mold in my fruiting chamber, which looked like this:

Except I covered it all in plastic sheeting and duct taped that in, etc. after that pic above was taken.

Yes, I know wood is not a good material for a fruiting chamber.  I was just being too clever and, well, I think it should be okay so long as I'm more careful with water build-up in the future.

Well, I guess the humidity (which was admittedly a bit excessive due to the "open" heatbomb got to the wood beneath the plastic.  Mold was discovered in a few places, THEN it had floated up beyond the plastic sheeting that served as a "ceiling" and was on the drawers directly above the cabinet space shown.

Anyway...I spent all afternoon cleaning the damn thing.  I sprayed h202 all over everything, then vinegar, wiped it down.  Did this twice over so I went through a lot of peroxide.  Then dried it out with a space heater.

It looks fairly clean now, but I think I will spray everything down with isopropyl alcohol.  Think this is necessary?  And will the iso kill anything left in there (living mold AND spores)?  I just don't like bleach fumes so I'm trying to avoid using bleach water.  Plus the thing is already dried out and I don't want to dry it again.

Thanks!

plastic should help as long as it keeps moisture from the wood. Wood is not a good chamber, Gl

The plastic should help a lot (and you can easily replace it!)

i wouldnt use plastic, really...even if you tape it down and everythign looks good, there are still tiny spaces for moisture and possibly more mold to cruise thru. if you dont want to upgrade your chamber i'd suggest using silicone sealer on all the cracks, then painting it with a few coats of latex-based paint.

Under his instruction, I taped drumsticks to his head and turned him into a sort of mummy, or perhaps a caterpiller in a cocoon. He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

Yeah, I'm considering whether to paint it or not.    It's not going to be in use for awhile, though, so I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.  Maybe if I get motivated.  :smirk:  Thanks.

plastic rubbermade tubs... you can find something cheap and usable if you wander
around home depot long enough... wood will always carry contams.

One thing nice about this fruiting chamber is, it takes about 15 minutes to empty & sanitize it like a surgical room.

If you have the room & means to move & set one up, a dead upright freezer is the BEST incubation / fruiting chamber I have ever used.

They can be had for FREE from appliance repair places. Just open the phone book, call around & ask.

You can automate fresh air exchange & maintain high RH with a coolmist piped in with pvc pipe. A jar of water, with a small watt adjustable fish tank heater in it, will heat the baby perfectly.

Gracias, Agar.

I am actually working on getting a spare freezer from my uncle that he's ready to toss out.  I have some edibles I'm going to try my hand at that I'd like to have some space for.

Oh, and thanks for all your advice.  You rock.

in that case pick up a gallon of Kilz water based primer, use 5 or 6 coats
on everthing inside the cabinet, pick up a gallon of high gloss oil based
paint, and do it all over again...
