Are these plants illegal to grow, or harvest?

yes to both questions if you live in the US. however a lot of older people tend to have many of them in their garden and nothing is ever said by the authorities..just keep them in your back yard or somewhere secluded if you want to grow

'Growing opium' is illegal.

Growing poppies for ornamental purposes is legal in the US as far as i understood :wink:

Yes but it's a very fine line. Once again as has been done by the DEA the active alkaloids were made illegal (morphine, codeine etc) yet the plant, Papaver somniferum, is not illegal, but technically, because it does contain opiates, it is illegal. So basically its up to the law enforcement to decide whether or not to prosecute. If you are clearly growing the poppies for their seed pods which produce the opium, don't get caught. I am currently working with a 'friend of a friend' to construct a rogue poppy garden.

Growing poppies knowingly is illegal.
If you have no idea what they are, or pretend you dont, your fine.

Yes they are. Poppy straw (all parts of poppy plant except seeds) are illegal in the US, and the poppy seeds are the only legal part.

Check erowid's legal things, it is pretty consistent with what I have read everywhere else, too.
