David Blaine, magic and illusion (for SlapHappy)
    #4099402 - 04/26/05 02:50 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Do I go looking for these things? No, I am just an impartial UN observer wearing a powder blue hat.

Watched Blaine doing some street magic. He did an age-old trick that goes like this:

Blaine: I will write down a three-digit number. *scribbles on pad with pencil*
I will attempt to transmit this number from my mind to your mind. (Hey! Sounds like my sig!) Now I want you to think of any three-digit number. *puts down pencil* OK, now tell me the number.

Volunteer: *frowns in deep concentration* 367.

Blaine shows pad with the number 367.

Volunteer (to camera): I could feel him transmitting the number to me. I knew we had a connection.

Swami: Naturally, there was no connection - it is a trick. Doh! Notice the ad hoc feelings that the volunteer overlays on the event. Remember folks, that many of you do this often: when there is no understanding, substitute some erroneous mystical explanantion. This same principle pertains to beliefs you hold dear.

A few days ago i was walking down a high street in my hometown, thinking of this girl i had'nt seen since high school. About ten minutes later when i was eating my homemade cheese and picke (Yum Yum)  sandwich outside McDonalds (McMurder) the same girl comes walking out of the Gap Shop opposite, walked right over to me and said "I was just thinking about you 10 minutes ago!". We were both amazed and puzzled at this experience. How can this be anything other than mystical?

BTW i have a date with her next week

Maybe you smelled her .

It's proven that to some degree we subconsciously recognize other individuals by virtue of their smell (pheromone's).

If you thought about her before, and liked her it could be a sign that you are prone to her scent.

 Have fun, and goodluck on your date.

How can this be anything other than mystical?

What about the zillion other times you were eating a sandwich thinking of someone you haven't seen in a while and.... they don't show up?

Given enough of these and other similar situations, it's a given that eventually some coincidence or other will occur.

Oh eys, of course, anything that seems mystical is always fobbed off as a coincidence. What about the fact that she was thinking about me the same time i was thinking of her? Is that now a double coincidence. What exactly are the odds of this happeining? About a zillion to 1? Come off it! Your coincidence theory has'nt a leg to stand on. Its actually more logical to consider it a mytsical experience.

I think of my ex 100 times a day and she called a few weeks ago after almost a year.

Swami to ex: "Hey baby, how weird is that? I was just thinking about you!"

Ex: "R-e-a-l-l-y?!"

Did you know that in a room with 23 people, the odds of sharing a birthday by chance with someone else in the room is 50/50? This out of 365 days in the year!

If you were unaware of this unintuitive statistical fact and found that out of the last four parties you attended twice you shared a birthday with someone, you might attribute it to something mystical.

Still, it would just be a statistical norm that isn't immediately apparent.

I'm not saying that mystical events don't occur, but I am saying that there's no evidence for them, and it's far more reasonable to believe coincidences are coincidences than they are mystical events.

No, not really, at least i would'nt. I would consider that a reasonable coinicinence

Still, it would just be a statistical norm that isn't immediately apparent.

Yes but mystical experiences cannot be evidentially verified becuase you cannot find tangible evidence of intangible phenomenon. Thereofre is something intagible happens that is beyond the explanaitons of science and other rational modes of thought (such as coincidence becuase the probability is just too unlikley) then it is more logical to assume something mystical occured.

Yes but mystical experiences cannot be evidentially verified

So then you have no way of knowing if an experience is mystical or not other than your own conclusion-jumping. CASE CLOSED!

Well, of course whether something is Mystical or not is totally subjective. There is no "Authority of mystical experiences" which says whether an experience was mystical or not. Mystcial experiences are just that, personal 'experiences' that the indivudal considers to be mystical, what is the problem with that, its not an assumption but an interpretation of experience. Im pretty sure that if you had an experience of merging into the vast space of universal concioussness, you would most liklely consider that to be 'mystical'. But maybe you would just write it off as a dellusion, who knows? its totally subjective.

For a start i had'nt thought about this girl in years beofre the day we bumped into each other. Secondly we were both thinking of each other at the exact same time before our meeting. Thirdly she no longer lives in my hometown and is just visiting breifly (3 weeks) . Lastly we were'nt even that close in high school (20 years ago) , although i did find her very attractive. So as you can see, the circumstances were very different from yours

On Blaine's levitation trick (standing on tip toes) at least three separate viewers who were totally awed, stated that he must be very spiritual and meditate a lot as they had read of "stuff" like that. After other tricks, many asked if he was a guru or advanced master.

Few commented that he was a skilled magician and entertainer.

Pfff.  I've yet to meet anyone personally who does.. and in my many, many years on 'teh intarwab'..  I believe I've met exactly 1 person born on the same day as I.

However, the first airing of Monty Python over in England?  same day I was born.  Not the same year obviously, but.. yeah  much better than sharing a birthday with someone else.

Thats very sad, some people are very naive

What's sad is that most everybody is naive most of the time. Hence corporation after corporation plays the same accounting tricks time and time again fleecing America out of hundreds of billions with almost never a conviction. Don't get me started on the oil shell game or wars for democracy...

Blaine completely fools people with simple tricks in broad daylight at close range. Compare that to UFOs at night miles away.

He is interesting, but the psychology of the gullible audience is far more interesting (to me).

I watched him do the 360 degree hand/wrist rotation thing. It is so incredibly simple and yet people gasp in total amazement. (It is based upon a false assumption).

Yes people are naive about alot of stuff. That why we have to overcome out human-robot syndrome that seems to have infected almost the entire human race, if people were being more aware, there would be less problems of naivity.

Im not one for speculation, i just belive UFO's are exactly that UFO's, i don't see what the big deal is all about.

On Blaine's levitation trick (standing on tip toes) at least three separate viewers who were totally awed, stated that he must be very spiritual and meditate a lot as they had read of "stuff" like that. After other tricks, many asked if he was a guru or advanced master.

Few commented that he was a skilled magician and entertainer.

heh, i do that trick sometimes,,it's amazing how amazed people are by it..

mmm, I'm willing to believe the possibility that you picked up on her smell. Olfactory sense is the most mysterious, and triggers the most intense reactions from us (smelling something from 5 years back can have a most profound effect, no?)

You got a date...

I'm gonna try smelling out more girls.

heheh, hey babe, i can smell you from a mile away :;):
