Question on 50/50+ casing

Hi everyone, First of all this is my first post here, but I've been doing some readings from this awesome website.
With the 50/50+ casing do I have to lay the substrate between the casing (between upper and lower case)? or can I just mix it up and let it incubate a little bit then lay a top layer casing? (just like some of the horse poo tek here) Can I also add a little bit of grounded Quinoa in the 50/50+ formula? According to Alien tek, Quinoa would increase potency.
Any help would be much appreciated Thanks everyone for making this website such an awesome web.

"With the 50/50+ casing do I have to lay the substrate between the casing (between upper and lower case)?"
No. The bottom layer is not needed. Some say it increases the chances of contamination as well.
"Can I also add a little bit of grounded Quinoa in the 50/50+ formula?"
If you do this, your chances of contamination will be extremely high (probably over 90%). The casing is supposed to be non-nutritive because it's teaming with sleeping molds and bacteria just waiting for some food like ground grain to go crazy.

thanks for the fast respones Helix. I remember reading somewhere that bottom layer is a no no. If I have contamination on the bottom layer I wouldn't be able to see it. I still want to know if I can mix the substrate with 50/50+, let it incubate more then lay a top casing layer? just like the horse poo tek. So it's not ok to mix quinoa in the 50/50+ because it nutritious, but it's OK to mix it with horse poo? I thought horse poo supose to be nutritious?

That's a good observation about the horse poo, but horse poo is composed of a lot of dead and living bacteria that are highly specific to digestive enzymatic profile of cubensis. In other words, cubensis has evolved to digest the exact stuff in the poo better than any competitor, which is why you can get away with adding it to the casing layer SOMETIMES. Having said that, I wouldn't do it, especially if you are using a peat-based casing. Adding horse manure to a peat-based casing is asking for a visit from the green meanie. Moreover, a casing is supposed to be non-nutritious so it doesn't colonize too well. Yes, you want the mycelium to run through the casing but not turn it to a mycelium block.

No. The bottom layer is not needed. Some say it increases the chances of contamination as well.
So then would you just put the subtrate on the bottom and then put the casing layer over it?
