 Shrooms growing off a SUBMERGED cake

I have no idea how shrooms can grow underwater. After reading PF's warning about "drowning" mycelium with water droplets and several discussions on the forum about over-misting and such, I figured this cake was just going to rot. I dunked it after harvesting its second flush, then got lazy and didn't take it out the next day to roll and double end case it, so it just stayed soaked in the jar in a water/peroxide solution for about two weeks. Then I noticed about 6 pins growing off of it, all completely underwater. They don't even look rotten, and they've been growing for about 4 days now. Makes no sense to me. I figure this will make a pretty good discussion topic on the forum, so here it is.

I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

That's wild! Do you plan to leave them under water to see how they develop? If you can spare the mushies to the name of science, it would be cool to know how fast and how long they'll survive like that. I assume they have not been in the refrigerator?

I would recommend transferring to a different container so they have more room to grow. That's pretty amazing. Good job!

Have seen this before with straw logs dunked for 24 hours plus. Despite comments to the contrary, pins can and will survive dunking, many actually thrive and grow quite healthily during the dunk, completely submerged. Have also seen this in natural cattle field settings, mushrooms growing right up out of a deep puddle.

ive seen natural hydroponic mushrooms growing before, entirely underwater in the florida swamps. what, everyone thought their was no such thing?

I am definitely not going to eat them, the things are disgusting enough to eat when grown normally, they don't need any help by being submerged in nasty looking water for two weeks. I'm just gonna leave them in there and see how much longer they'll go. The reason it's so weird to me is that you read all the dangers of letting your shrooms get wet, and here they are growing under water.

If you've never heard any dangers of shrooms getting wet then you haven't spent much time on these forums or read any of the teks. In the contam FAQs, it says bacterial blotch results from shrooms having water on them over a period of time. In the PF tek it mentions the need for a spray shield to keep your cakes from coming in direct contact with water because it would "drown" the mycelium. I could think of a few more but there you have it.

It is not hydroponic I think because it still has the substrat. Now, if you were to grow it in nutrient saturate water, that would be a whole different story.

I would think now that misiting a cake directly w/with out mushies would be fine now.

I think shrooms taste great, I would eat them as a snack if they didn't fuck you up so bad.

i Have forgotten to undunk for a couple days and still had the cakes pin once i took them out, but certainly havent seen any pin in water. sweet!

I wouldn't exactly call those hydroponic, but do you have any idea what specie they were? I've never heard of anything like that... I'd like to try putting some in my fishtank : )
