I've been using this for a long while and it's very nearly the same price.
I guess I'm saying that I had no idea it was difficult to find a decent deal on agar powder.

it looks like it may not be. i've never even looked for food grade agar before, so that price took me by suprise. i'm low on cash right now, so buying lab grade agar isn't really something i want to do at the moment.

I checked the price per unit, its 1.18/ounce. Thats really cheap compared to lab grade, but I still pay less at my local Asian grocer. $1.99 for two ounces is what I pay.

I forgot. What so great about lab grade? I would suppose it is more translucent. Any other factors?

do the asain markets sell agar powder or just the celophane looking noodle agar? the noodles are a pain for me to weigh with my powder scale and i would like to just have some uniform scoop measurement instead of really needing to bust out the scale every time.

Lab grade agar gels at a cooler temperature and the final product is harder.
The stuff I buy is rectangular and easy to tear up. So I usually just stack it up on my balance or measure in increments.

It's also mainly a matter of purity. Lab grade will be free of nearly all extraneous protein or other impurities which won't actually affect a mushroom cultivation project in the least.
