i am doing it with peat moss, They tek says "If you don't own a pressure canner/cooker then pasteurize this mix. You pasteurize by putting the casing soil inside, say an old pillow case, twist and tie up the top so that no casing soil leaks out. Then put it into a pot of water. The water temperature should be around 150?F. Maintain this temperature for an hour." What do you guys think i should do cause i do not have a that will withstand the PC.

where is this tek is it on the website because i have never read this? u might be right about that, but i would tend to think u would pasteurize between 160-175.

nah man, sterilize the thing. i mixed it up, got it to the proper water capacity, put it in a pyrex dish, put foil on it, and baked it for like 90 minutes at 275.
0% contamination.

ya ok i found it well ya then i would do that im really paranoid about contams, but thats exactly what u would do then. If im in a hurry i just throw it in the microwave good luck. plus i would do a 50/50+ just because of peat moss being acidic.

did u have water in ur mix because if u did it would not go above boilding when u stearlized it. But another hand I would boil it instead of pasteurizing it kill more contams.

i am quite sure that you take away helpful bacteria from a casing material when you sterilize as opposed to pasteurize. i believe that the aim of the microwave method is to actuall pasteurize it, and this is why it is done in intervals and not at length.
i have always been curious if this method actually pasteurizes it or if it sterilizes? maybe someone more knowledgable will chime in.

i am going to bake it at 275 for 90 min. Should i add water to it before or after considering that i think it will dry out in the oven.

yeah it was wet. *shrug* all i know is whatever i'm doing is working. so i pass on alternatives to "the rules" whenever somebody says one thing and i know of another way that works too.

i load mine up into a microwave-safe dish and add more then enough water to account for evaporation. cover with food-service parafilm-type stuff (forgot the name) and microwave for ten minutes. let it sit for ten. then do it again.

now i am wondering is there helpful bacteria in peat moss? plus with a verm being 50% all it needs to do is start on a piece of moist verm and spread since there is no helpful bacteria in the verm.

i'm pretty sure. this is why pasteurization is reccomended. the reason i recall is when reading about pan cyan cultivation, the experts say that you need to sterilize the casing material because of it's slow colonization time. they were quite adamant that this was not the case with cubensis cultivation, however.

its possible. its also possible that part of the peat's treatment before it gets bagged and sealed and sent to your local garden center kills off contams *shrug* it would be interesting to try a small bit of unsterilized, pasteurized, and sterilized peat/verm casings...
