re-using an old casing
    #4096868 - 04/25/05 09:48 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

i would first like to say hello to the shroomery public, i am a new member but have read up on this site for a while now.

so i have a question for the more experienced out there.

i was wondering if an idea i had would work well or not, i currently have avaliable two casings that have produced 2 decent flushes ea. now they are tired out and wont give much of a third flush so they are pretty much done. What i was thinking of doing was to take these casings, mush them up in a plastic bag like you do to case pf-jars, and mix them in a new casing with a few inches of verm/brown rice flour/water, ill wait till this colonizes then case it with a coco/verm/oyster top layer. Now the second part of this question is is brown rice flour fine to microwave as done for coco/verm casing material?

If the casing is tired out that means the mycelium is exhausted and cannot continue to grow. I would just put them outside and cover them with some cow poo/straw, and just start a new casing. Much easier.

I wouldn't put in any new substrate as I've found older mycylia to be more prone to contams...
Have you considered a dunk followed by a new casing layer?

i dont have the ability to throw these outside considering my location is a college campus, and i dont have ready access to properly use poo/straw, i hope that the brown rice flour will give it pleanty to grow on, that is whats used for the pf-jars. But then again my growing knowledge is limited to an extent, so what do u guys think?

Throw 'em in a trashbag and dump 'em off campus.

Yea, it's really not worth all the trouble when your probably gonna end up with little or no results, ditch em in a trash bag.

I still say try an overnight fridge dunk with a 20:1 peroxide rinse to help avoid contams.

i want to try it....because i want to see what i can get skipping the jar process completely, mycelium injected into a pf-jar colonizes faster then spores, and i want to get the old casings to not get contams and colonize a new casing(much like a birdseed spawn in a straw or poo substrate), so i can skip the jar process completely

i understand that contams are a serious problem with this idea, but maybe a dunk with peroxide like golden suggested before i mix them into a casing mix with brf.

Do you plan on pre-sterilizing the new substrate first before you mix the old stuff in?

of course, i would make 2 substrates:

The first would be brf/verm/water like a pf-jar, microwaved for 10 mins or so stopping to shake it around once, this is why i want to know if brf is ok in the microwave, this substrate would be mixed with the old mycilium chunks as to surround the old mycilium with the new to protect from contams

the second substrate would be your average coco/verm/oyster shell casing also microwaved used as a top layer when the first substrate is colonized

Why do you think it's the mycelium that is exhausted and not that the _substrate_ is what's actualy exhausted - of nutes and/or moisture?

I say try it.

This has been debated quite a bit in another couple posts; I think mostly with me being the only one who seems to believe that it has merit... despite the fact that there have been others who have reported success.

See here and here.

I'm still waiting to actualy put it to the test myself.

My advice to you however, is to be sure to put the refurbished substrate back into proper incubation conditions/environment, and take it from there.
