A few questions
    #409599 - 09/30/01 08:50 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

My jars are almost done colonizing but I have a few questions befoe I take the next step.

1. I see fluffy white stuff all throught my jars, almost 100%. The only thing that makes me a little nervous is that I see lil yellowish brown spots in a couple of places. It looks like the exact color of the brf/verm substrate. Should I be nervous or is this normal?

2. When I case the jars, shoud I through away the top verm layer?

3. Whats the best or most used way of actually casing. I get the whole casing tech but I was curious to know the most popular variations of the layers to put down.

4. Do I have to wait until I see pins before casing? Or just until the jars are all fluffy white?

Thanks in advance!

First timer casings should be vermiculite only because of the low contamination ratio.

1. More than likely those spots are signs of minor water damage, no big deal happens all the time.

2. Yes.

3. My friend has had success with using moist verm for bottom layer, then 2" of substrate, then a 1/4 to 1/2" of steralized Jiffy Mix for the top. With the Jiffy Mix, add enough water to make it muddy but no standing water, it should just be very wet, then microwave for 10 minutes. You should have only moist Jiffy Mix when done, the microwave evaporates most of the water. Let this cool to room temperature (it helps to stir it every once in a while with a clean spoon). Use this for the top layer making sure to not pack it down on top of the substrate just let it fall on top and cover it up. There are many ways to case, this is just one...

4. You do not want to see pins when casing. If fact you should have your colonizing jars in complete darkness when your going to case them. Light will trigger to mycelium to start fruiting and if your casing you want to keep the mycelium in "growth" mode so to say. It just takes longer to case pinning cakes because the mycelium has to switch modes to grow through the casing layer, then switch again to fruit.

good luck!
