Simmering works great every time. Just simmer the grains for half an hour until they're plump and just a few have burst, drain, rinse thoroughly with cold water and leave to drain for half an hour.

hello. i have tried both ways and have come to the conclusion that unless you know the exact measurement, your wasting your time. and even if you do, shit can still go wrong. i just boil on med/high for 45 minutes exactly. then just fill the jars and pc. 1 hour exactly.
haven't had one go bad or soggy since.
good luck.

Simmering grain is best. But you can also use a 1-1 ratio grain to water and then PC. For spawn a bit less water is best.

So do y'all don't soak before simmering, or you do?

I have never soaked nor simmered my rye.  I started off with the recipes from FungiFun.  Was tweaked here and there for the right water for me, but works quite well.  I've never had a single jar contam.  I'm one of many with the opinion that soaking and simmering is just a waste of time... BTW, heres a pic of a jar that was colonized 100% after 6 days from a LC.  Pic was actually taken at day 10, 4 days after 100% colonization.  This jar was prepared in the manner I posted above... GL bro :stoned:

PS. Sorry bout the double post...

Im using half-pints btw :frown:
I have mycobags too... but I want to do half-pints right now, just for a small bucket op.

Should I still use about 0.56 cups Rye to 0.46 cups of water per jar?

Damn that quart looks so perfect and fluffy...

Both. I try and soak, but if I just need spawn done, I sometimes just simmer longer. I think I get bacteria more if I dont soak...not much either way though thats notable....could be coinsidense too  It just takes no extra effort for me since I dont do allt he drinaing and such...just throw it in the pot and fill with water like Im gonna simmer and set it off to the side until the next day, then just throw the pot on the stove, simmer and strain.

  Sounds good!  Half pints will colonize very quickly too, so you shouldn't have a problem with contams if you pay any sort of attention to sterility.  If you're skeptical about not soaking and simmering, I suggest do half and half, then you'll be able to better decide what works best for you.  It seems that rye is one of those things thats just different for everyone.... nice, thx NeedMoreSleep, you've been incredibly helpful! This is my first attempt at rye. I eyeballed it.. I tryed to do roughly .45 cups of water to .55 cups of rye. I'm spawning it to a 50/50 composted mixture of horse crap and compost.

Sounds good, let us know how it works out.  I have a sneaking suspicion you're on your way to a very nice grow

God I hope so!
Its in the PC right now. I can just now start to hear it starting up. Unfortunately its a $25 1 from Walmart, 10 psi, I can only fit 4 half pints in it, or 1 myco-bag.

I'd say go at least 90 mins if not 120 on the PC at 10psi.  I worked with rye in a 10psi PC for a while, so you should be fine in this regard.  GL bro :stoned:
