stalled colonization of jar?
    #4019613 - 04/05/05 10:50 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

The colonization of a jar seems to have stopped for over a week. It is not infected. It hasn't changed color or appearance or anything. Certain parts of the outside of the jar just aren't being taken over with mycellium. I think it might be because there is not enough moisture in the jar...is this a possibility? What course of action should be taken? Should more water be injected into the partially colonized jar?

brf? im guessing then u could add sterile water to it but i wouldn't i tried it before just makes puddle. i would just cut the off whats not colonized.

What temp, what substrate? How long was it colonizing before the stall? Does it smell funny?

total darkness in the mid-high 70s...

this is for the formula reccomended in the newbie guide...
for 1/2 pint canning jars (250 ml):

1/4 cup of brown rice powder
1/2 cup of vermiculite
45 - 60 ml (cc) water (1/4 cup = 59 ml)

it colonized for maybe 2 weeks before stalling...

it doesn't smell funny through the masking tape; risk of infection has kept the jar closed

should it be placed in indirect light?

Take the tape off to allow oxygen into the jar.

^^that won't contaminate it?

also, the jar was turned upside down after it stalled for a bit

It's very unlikely it will contaminate. The vermiculite is a barrier for contaminants. In the past I have fully opened jars in non-sterile environments without contamination.

i suppose it depends on how dirty your place really is and contaminant fallout at the place you are storing for colonization.

i've done the same as actionshroom and left jars without lid and also i almost never bothered with tape. contamination was very unusual (enough to surprise me whenever it happened). but then again... my place was relatively clean, i did all procedures in a glove box and my colonizations spot was very clean with no (very little) moving air.

Pull the tape off...the verm barrier will protect the substrate.

The tape is what is stalling your jar...you have a CO2 build up.

The jar will take off again after you pull the tape off.

good luck!~

I pull the tape off my BRF/Verm jars when the mycelium is about the size of a Quarter or 50 cent pc. inside the jars.

of the 6 that have myc, they are all about the size of a quarter. I'm hoping for the other 2 jars, but something may have gone wrong.

ok...it's been about 20 days since i took off the tape...
about 12 days ago i injected some water into the cake because taking off the tape did nothing...
i'm still really not seeing much of anything...

is my only option taking off the lid? do you really think this is what's holding it back? i'm very baffled o.O =(
