WBS question.
    #4092798 - 04/24/05 09:21 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I have never really tried using wild birdseed as a substrate for casing, so I have a couple of questions before I try this. Can I inoculate the WBS the same way I did the brf/verm? Is WBS more efficient than BRF/verm? Is there a certain brand of bird seed that I should get?
Any input would be appreciated.

Birdseed is ideal for a bulk spawn material. It's cheap and easy to prepare, and creates a lot of inoculation points for laying out in larger (bulk) substrates. You can use it to fruit straight, but pound for pound I find BRF cakes to make a better substrate for casing. It depends what you want to do with it. I cased WBS once and never did it again.

it works, follow divers link for info. Here is something i just posted that shows it will fruit when used as substrate. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4092774/an/0/page/0

Although, like diver said it is more suited for spawning bulk or g2g transfers.

Diver, what didn't you like about casing WBS? Did the mycelium take longer to pin because it was spread out more?

I was going to do WBS from now on, but I was going to try some bulk and some cased. If there is a problem with straight casing, I'd sure like to know now, before I go any further.

There's no specific problem with casing WBS Wronguy, I just didn't get great results using it. WBS as a substrate really lacks that high moisture content (like h/poo) to sustain some nice flushes.

On the other hand WBS is my favorite spawn material for cubes/gourmets, I love it for that.

Thanks for the incite Diver. Oh, and call me August. If all goes well with my bulk attempts, I'll probably never look back on straight casings.

Hehe, ok August.  You'll get it down, just visualize success and keep plugging away.  Once you're there, you definitely won't look back, believe me.
