Morel Motherload
    #4090040 - 04/23/05 09:58 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I had to work all day today.  I got off with a few hours of daylight left and decided to have myself a walk on a private acreage to see if the rumors I'd been hearing of a great morel season were true.  After about 10 minutes in the woods I found a dead elm with lots of bark on the ground around it  I was thinking to myself it must still be to cold and at that moment I  looked down and right at the tip of my boot there was a small grey I had knocked over and nearly stepped on.  I got down on my hands and knees and picked a pound in no time.  I didn't have a sack, knife, nothing.. I really wished I had my camera on me but sometimes thats how things are.  I took my cap off my head and began to fill it, that quickly filled so I took of my t-shirt and tied into a sack.  After hunting for an hour and half I had my shirt filled and went back to the car to unload then headed out again. After that I got into a hillside filled, I mean filled with yellows.  I walked past so many and just left tons out there, I felt greedy enough already but I know alot of old timers who don't get out these days that will love them!  I ended up filling a 50lb burlap potato sack completely up.  Here they are, not bad for a newbie.

Sorry about the low quality pic but you get the idea  :sun:

Thanks guys.

I'm going to try preserving some as an experiment but most of them will be consumed by me and the many happy people I give them away to. I know alot of old timer woodsman how can't get out like they used to so I'll be driving around and sharing the wealth tomorrow.

Thanks for working on the picture guys, I don't even have editing software on this system and I just had to get it up as fast as possible.

I found these in Northwest Iowa on a 40 acre woodland some close friends own.  I will be going out here shortly with a nice camera and a real sack
Word spreads fast though, I'm not the only person who can use this ground so hopefully they are still there.

Congratulations, man! That is great.
If that water you have them soaking in isn't salt water for some reason, I'd pour it out in an area that looks good for morels. That's what i did with trumpets and chanterelles last year, and i can't wait to find out if they were conceived!
Anyway- wonderful finds and wonderful pics. It seems like Iowa is the place to be this year.

Well I went out again and it turns out tresspassers were out there. They had 3 grocery sacks full when they were ran into... evil fuckers.. I checked a few other areas with very little luck, nothing like the area in the pictures, but still great finds. Hopefully they keep popping, hunting is great fun and the area the tresspassers were on still have potential with the weather we are having.

I made some good rounds today handing them out, I gave away that 20lb potato sack to my uncle and 2 other gallon zip lock bags.

I've heard you can freeze them and they will keep for a month or so, so I'm giving that a try along with the dehydrator I have going.

trees like this is where I found all the greys, the yellows weren't near as pickey.
If you are north of Iowa or you are still out of season, when you see the lilacs blooming the mushrooms will be popping.

Our active season isnt very good yet because its been a dry spring

I wish I would of wieghed, I have no clue how much was there. I fan dryed cubes back in the day when I grew, I guess I could try that. Right now I have a dehydrator full and it seems to be working pretty well. The only problem with that is they just aren't near as tasty as freshies.

Thanks, I soaked them in salt water over night and layed a bunch out on cookie sheets. I let these freeze for an hour before putting them into freezer bags, I guess this works pretty well besides the fact that they fall apart easily when thawed. I also dehydrated a few pounds but they don't look so hot, they look almost black. I guess this is normal, I'll have to rehydrate a few in the coming days to see how they are. Right now I've definitly had my fill though, everyone I gave them to had to cook me up a few and I had already eaten enough on my own.

The season here is just beginning though, hopefully more pics to come.

Odd, drying typically concentrates and enhances flavor in mushrooms. I can't speak for morels, tho. Maybe your referring more to texture and the resulting psychology than actual flavor?

I was cool with them, I found out later they weren't welcome there. A few others have permission and I wasn't sure if they were some of them, they didn't act alarmed by my presence so I had no way of knowing if they had access or not. This season is great, they are still popping, if it gets little warmer the big ones should really start coming. We have snow in the forecast for tonight though, not sure what that is going to do.

I just missed the monsters, I think the season has officially ended here. I picked nice quanities every few days for nearly 3 weeks. Yesterday I went out and found the forest floor covered in decomposing monsters, all much larger than my hand. I hadn't checked any spots since last weekened and I guess I missed the really big haul.

Well I guess I was wrong stumbled accross this patch on a walk through my friends woods when I was heading to his cabin to help him work on it.

Found a lot of other patches but those mushrooms were all sun dried.

Oh yeah the dehydrated mushrooms are wonderful I soak them in water for an hour before use and they are just as good as fresh ones in my opinion. I would never, ever freeze them again though, yuck.
