Tough white skin.. possible contamination?
    #4089733 - 04/23/05 10:02 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Background Info: BRF cakes, steam sterilized, inoculated with syringes.

Ok.. I inoculated 12 Ball jars total roughly 3-4 weeks ago and only 1 showed signs of contamination throughout colonization. ... Or so I thought. Three of these jars were inoculated with Thai Elephant Dung, which I purchased from www.thelittleguy.com. These were by far the fastest to colonize, in fact they looked almost fully colonized within a week. I decided to wait to move these into my fruiting chamber until I saw pinheads developing inside the jars, just so I could be sure they were 100% done. Weeks went by and there was not even a hint of pinning. When the rest of the cakes were colonized, I compared them to the Thai Elephant Dung jars. I noticed that the 3 jars that were inoculated with TED had a more opaque whiteness, rather than the vine-like mycelium in the other jars. Also, there were small areas with a purplish tint. Intrigued by this difference, I decided to take one of the TED cakes out of its jar, only to find that it was stuck! After nearly 10 minutes of pounding the sides and bottom of the jar, the cake dropped onto the cap of the jar, and large white sections were left on the side of the jar. This had not happened with any of my other cakes, which immediately arroused my suspicion. I cut it open to see if there was any contamination on the inside, but the inside looked barely colonized, with only a bit of white throughout. Also, as I was cutting through the cake, I noticed that the white on the outside was quite tough, and tore like a piece of rubber, rather than breaking apart.

Unfortunately I will not have pictures of this until tomorrow, but I'd like any feedback I can get ASAP.

Is this a contamination? Or does Thai Elephant Dung only grow on a dung substrate?

It sounds like it could be contam, but I'll have to wait to see the pics before I can truly give my verdict.

Fully colonized BRF cakes in a week?? Sounds like you've got some contams to me. Brush up on your sterility .. read some FAQ's and keep your fingers crossed for the rest of em

Sorry guys, no picture today yet... My friend still hasn't come back with the software. Hopefully tomorrow.
My other cakes are all fruiting quite well... gonna pick my first 2 most likely 2 days from now.
I have one of those TED cakes left... but I'm pretty sure its contaminated. Think it may have been contaminated from inoculation/the entire syringe was contamed.
