Report: Trips in Pictures - April 22, 05
    #4088138 - 04/23/05 10:42 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Well this is the first in what I hope will be a series of trip reports with pictures. This time I went to one of my favorite trails near Banff, Alberta, Troll Falls. When I got there I ate a mediocre dose of dried Golden Teachers, maybe 2.5 grams (was all I had), grabbed my pack and camera and headed off into the woods. While I was waiting for the mushrooms to kick in I spent some time looking around for some wild ones to pick, but I quickly decided it was still too early.

Eventually I came to the first waterfall of the trail:

I'd never seen it like this, with ice all around it. The water actually formed a little cave underneath all the ice. By now the shrooms were starting to kick in, I felt very light and very comfortable with everything. After a short stop here I decided to keep going until I got to the second waterfall.

By now I was really feeling the mushrooms. Everything around me felt alive, the waterfalls had a sort of aura to them. It was amazing to experience, like everything around me turned into a completely different world. Normally on these hikes trees and mosses and water would look more like inanimate objects, but this time it was like they all had their own character, it really made me feel like I was a visitor in a town of nature. I kept walking.

Eventually I reached the third waterfall, as wandered onto the ice to get a closer look at it my foot fell through and my shoe was completely soaked. It didn't phase me at all, I was in such a good mood that I just took off my shoes and continued on bare foot. I took this shot just after it happened, the wet shoe is on the log:

After a while I reached my favorite spot in the hike. This place was amazing, imagine a giant chunk of rock surrounded by a creek and two waterfalls. I sat on the rock and just relaxed, taking in the sounds all around me. It was as if nature were soaking up all my stress and worries about final exams next week, I was completely content.

Here I decided to smoke the bowl I brought along. This is where the trip turned around, everything after this was unbelievable. The weed has never been this intense for me during a trip, and IMO I owed it all to the nature around me. I sat down in my favorite spot, a flat, smooth rock parked right above one of the waterfalls.

I took this shot, then I realized I was out of film =( =( This is where the trip got funky, but I'll try to explain what I was experiencing. First, this whole part of the trip can be defined in one word: FRACTALS. Everywhere I looked there were fractals. As I looked up into the sky, the trees around me seemed to grow into eachother to make a giant fractal of nature. I started perceiving everything in layers, the trees were one layer, the sky another, the ground yet another, and the layers were all playing around with eachother, growing into eachother, then shrinking again. I'd never seen anything like it.

Then came the music. The waterfalls, the wind, the birds, they all combined to form a song. I could hear this song as clear as if I were listening to the radio, I could make out the individual "instruments" and melodies. As I concentrated on sound more, I could swear that I was picking up on actual radio. I could hear music, mostly electronic, fade in and out amidst the normal static you get from radio. It was faint, but it was there. It was like a skipping record of radio. I kept falling into a state of semi-consciousness where I was barely breathing, aware not of the normal reality but this 'other world' that was engulfing me. When I breathed I could feel the air moving through my lungs.

I let myself go into this weird alternate fractal reality until I couldn't stand it anymore. It was like I was being ripped away from reality and thrown into some crazy world of fractals, waterfall music, skipping radio and frogs in the distance. It wasn't frightening at all, almost welcoming, but after a while I'd had enough.

I gathered my pack, put on my shoes (ugh.. the cold, damp sock was horrible) and headed back. The second I started moving I stopped and laughed. I was moving through a zooming fractal. It was amazing, like I was falling into a giant fractal of nature. As I walked through the trees I could see myself going where I wanted to go before I actually did. If I was about to walk past a tree, I would see myself moving past it, then my mind would skip backwards a step and I actually would step past it. This was continually happening, as if my mind didn't know what NOW was anymore, it kept skipping between present and a second into the future.

The only thing I can think of now is that I was perceiving every frame of vision as my brain was processing it. It wasn't the usual smooth flow of motion, it was staggered and fractaly. The trip down went much faster than the trip up, I was falling through the trail like a pro, twisting and turning around obstacles like they weren't even there.

When I got to the clearing at the bottom (it was a meadow absolutely filled with birch trees) I was aware of absolutely everything at once. It was like I was all over the meadow seeing it from all angles at once. Every tree, every blade of grass was crystal clear. On my way through here, nature gave me a little escort. A bee whizzed around my head, dutifully escorting me out of its territory. As I walked it would back off, but whenever I stopped to look at something it would be back in seconds with a stern "Don't try anything funny, just keep moving". I had to laugh at my little escort, but I obeyed him nonetheless and kept moving.

I got back to my car and threw on some music, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, and churned over what I'd seen, trying to make sense of it all.

Without a doubt the best trip of my life. Looking forward to next time, I'll drag my roommate along to so I can actually get some shots of people with all the nature =P

Grovesk8ter: Sure, I'll upload some larger versions and PM you a link. Which ones?

The waterfalls were amazing, in the first shot there you can see there's actually a little cave behind the waterfall, so you could walk behind this massive wall of ice. It wasn't a very good day for taking pictures (too much contrast between light and dark spots in the pictures) but they turned out alright =)

Amazing trip report! I would give you good ratings but not enough posts :frown:. Anyways, amazing stuff, awsome trail and great description. The whole fractals thing really made sense.

Thank You. That was fun. I saw some mini cauliflowers at Whole Foods yesterday. They had very clear fractals in the heads. I mean, crystal clear. Yes, fractals are the strange flow of chaos combining with order to form a wholeness greater than either. The intellect cannot comprehend it, but the heart sees it as Divine Truth in play. The Mahalila, if you will.

Nice man. Banff is one of my favorite places. I stayed at Banff Springs Hotel for about 10 days when I was... maybe 10 years old or so, with my 2 sisters and parents. It was awesome. I'd like to goto Jasper sometime, since its in BC I bet there would be weed cafe's around. Score some ganj, get ur shrooms and head off into the wilderness for a "trip".

Those pics look a lot like Wyoming, which is another Rocky Mountain Destination I've been to. I actually lived there for a couple of years. The Rockies are so beautiful. Especially when you're tripping.

I get this every time I trip and smoke pot.
