Need ID on this species...mexicans?
    #4082078 - 04/21/05 06:40 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

A friend grew these, and she's wondering what species they are. She has an idea, but wonders what you all think.

She thinks they were Mexican-cubes, as they were labeled.

However, she's wondering if they might be Huautla, Mextiza, or some other Mexican strain. What classifies something as just plain mexican-cube and not one of those other types? How do you tell? What is the difference between a mexican-cube and say huatla, for example?

a. Habitat - Grown in growkit
b. Characteristics of the gills - pale tan/white
c. Measurements of cap and stem - 2-3 inch stem, 1-1.5 inch cap
d. Characteristics of the stem - white, pale, solid
e. Characteristics of the cap - light brown/tan, lightening towards edge
f. Spore print color - purple
g. Color that the mushroom bruises - blue
h. Scent of mushroom - earthy

Wow, those are beautiful. Those appear to be Golden Teachers or Cambodians. Only a guess though. Thanks for sharing those photos!

The species is Psilocybe cubensis. As far as the hunting forum is concerned, strains don't matter. Psilocybe cubensis is Psilocybe cubensis.

My opinion: strain identification is such an arbitary practice that there is really no use in it. Your mushrooms are Psilocybe cubensis. They're active. That's what matters.

Moving this to hmmm... I guess mushroom cultivation. They do things like IDing strains there.

Why would you say that? It's impossible to tell a cube strain from a cube strain just by looking at them. Unless it's PE or one of the unusual strains.

I also go for cambos

Even when it's very hard to tell, and most importantly, it doesn't really matter. They are definitely cubies

you can always tell mexicans if they are slow to colonize, and the trip itself feels really lazy.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Complete bullshit, there's no way of telling, I've seen all sorts of strains colonize slow. And trip is not set by strain.

My limited two cents, those look like cambodians to me as well. In the end, it doesn't matter, but when i look at the caps compared to my cambodians, they look almost identical.

And the mexican joke, GODDAMN THAT WAS FUNNY!
