You'll never know, as you will never know anything. There really is no way to express ego loss, because the concept is so extremely alien and unique for different people. Don't worry about it. It isn't important.

My girlfriend always says to me she never thinks it happened to her. But I think it's precisely because she's looking for a moment to pinpoint it, she's looking for something. I always tell her that sometimes I feel like ego loss comes and goes, washes over you and then recedes, then hits you again. And so for just a few moments, you feel the utter connectedness of everything, that all-love feeling, and perhaps then it passes for a moment..but while it was there, you were ego-less.

All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake. -Erik Davis

You won't know that you experienced what most call "ego-loss" until after the fact, so it's best to just let go and see where the sacred fungus will take you. As always, set/setting are crucial.

for me ego-loss is just that... you're gone, literally. when it happened to me on acid, i don't know what i became, but i had no shape or form, i was like an atom or something. i know it sounds crazy, because it was.

for me i always feel like i'm about to die right before
you don't know it when its happening though because there is no you anymore
but your energy returns to the ultimate eternal state of ALL that you have long forgotten since your existence began...and there is no denying it...all the illusionary borders and boundaries dissolve into one endless infinite eternal ocean
when you are reborn into "self" that's when you will know

I've never had full on ego loss... but I've had multiple ego splitting. Once on shrooms I was talking to myself in a mirror for 20 minutes, seeing different versions of myself, all at once. The versions all represented different points of view. It was pretty cool.
And maybe once I had ego loss, when I took 4gs of shrooms and some salvia. For a minute there I was blind, deaf, and not thinking a single thought. It was complete silence and darkness, I did not know who I was, where I was, or what I was. It was as if I was brain dead or something. I think it's kind of wierd that I remember that experience, as it didn't seem my brain was working at the time. But it lasted only a minute or so before I came to.

i think one way to explain it is to bring it back to Freud since he coined ego superego and id... i see it as you take out the ego, the moderator, more or less... so then you have the id and superego left... you experience straight up, unfiltered innate drives (id) and the drive for absolute goodness, to do what is "right" (superego) and you see these things without the ego filter...
just one way to see it

This is a pretty accurate description of what ego-loss is for me, too.
The most important part being the last line... you don't know you've experienced it until you return, because DURING it, there's no "you" to identify with.

I too believe that Slip did a very good job describing it. It seems to be something that you cannot understand while actually experiencing ego loss. Even when you are falling back towards baseline, it is all still a very confusing experience. You just realize that you are "back" again.

Do I get it right when I say its not something you can understand, know or even remember - only experience?
And when it starts its just so god damn familiar, but when its over you forget what its all about? When waves were washing me out of this world and to the other side, I realized that's what lies between earthy, individual incarnations...

It is in experience, not in words. It can't fit in words. How could you fit the whole world into some small characters that try to form a symbol. 8, that is about as close as one can get.

That seems about right to me... I've felt that way many times on shrooms.

Once I was on the edge. I felt depersonalised - my body wasn't mine. It felt like a character in a video game - I controled my self but I didn't felt any connection with my body. I coudln't think about myself, about who I am, what I want and where am I. I was highly confused and a bit worried because I didn't knew what was happening. VERY teaching experience. It wasn't 100% ego-loss but I know how it is .
That day I ate 40, very potent, Polish psilocybe semilanceatas. I hope it's helpful.
