Has anyone done a stint with the Peace Corps?
    #4085749 - 04/22/05 06:49 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I went to the Earth Day festival at my school today and there was a table about the Peace Corps. I talked to the girl at the table for a while and it sounds like something I could seriously consider doing after I get my undergrad. It's doubtful that I'll get a job with a B.S in Psychology, so Peace Corps could be a great way to change my surroundings and help people while I'm at it.

Anyone done it? Is it worthwhile? Terrible? Let me hear about it.

God I hope someone responds to this thread- their site is not so comprehensive as I'd like it to be and what an opportunity it sounds like!

Haven't been a participant, but many FOAFs have done it, and it always seems to be a life-changing experience.

Go for it, and tell us about it!

I've thought about Americorps and met a few people that have done it. You don't need a degree. It was originally intended for high school grads but they have programs people on extended college break. I felt I'd share just incase you were inclined to put off that BS of Quackary degree. LoL.... jk, well no not really, no offense intended.

I've been considering it, too. Don't know anyone who's done it, but it sounds like their slogan--"The toughest job you'll ever love"--rings true for the most part.

Yeah I'm actually kind of excited, which sucks because I'll be here for at least 2 more years.

Ive done the California Conservation Corps and the National Community Civilian Corps.

ALL them volunteer programs kick ass.. You will get the chance to do things others will never get to do and you will be well taken care of during your stint..

When its over you collect a phat check along with college benefits and you get to keep the memories.

Best part is that its these programs are sort of like joining the military.. Cept for you can quit any time and it can lead to better opportunities than any job ever can.

i good friend of mine did it right out of college...

he really hated it. he was placed in the gambia and was given a broken shovel, a hoe and a bucket. he was placed there to help this village farm. how can a city kid from the US teach a village of farmers and herders how to farm?

he dropped out after 1 year and started teaching english in Brazil and then mexico... a job he found more fulfilling in a part of the world he enjoys more. now he teached english in S Korea and makes good money...

AFOAF who has his masters in engineering is in the peace corps in africa as well, he seems to like it. but he does pretty important work designing irrigation systems for farming villages in french west africa...

the way i see it: if you have a skill/education that can be taught or can help enrich the lives of 3rd world citizens, it could be rewarding. but if you are some Philosophy grad with no "real" translatable skill...you will most likely be placed in a crappy situation like my friend Bill.

If it weren't for the bloody corpses, I wouldn't have any corpses at all.

I used to think about it a lot. I've had some friends do it.

They liked it because they got to travel, have fun, and get a chunk of their loans paid off.

They disliked the fact that they lived without electricity and running water, and had trouble communicating due to language barriers.

I recommend it. IMO

shock the first few months.

uncomfortable the new few months.

I enjoyed the last 18 months and was sad to leave.

most of the volunteers i knew had degrees with some separate skill.

examples:

construction
farming
health field

Guatemala, Central America.

my wife was in the peace corps in Honduras. i met her visiting some Mayan ruins in Honduras.

my job was building stoves that use less fire-wood and building above ground latrines. the stoves were popular but not the latrines.
