I need help with 3 topics:

Hey there,
I am really enjoying this forum...great bunch of folks !

I have three quick questions for all you veterans out there:

(1) Will this work ok in a casing with vermiculite ?

I know it says coco fiber, but its in a brick...will this work ?

(2) Also, what is the acceptible humidity range in a birthing chamber ?

(3) And lastly, is using a flashlight enough light to get them to orientate themselves ? (I've read on this forum that as long as you can see the cakes through your light source it's enough, but just wanted to make sure)

thanks in advance !

1)  You really should be using coco coir instead of coco fiber.  Fiber is too stringy to be used as a casing layer.  On the left is coir, fiber on right:

2)85% Rh has worked perfectly for my casings...

3)  A flashlight should work fine.  I'm worried about the longevity of it though.  How long do you leave it on at a time, and how often do you change the batteries?

Even tho in the package says coco fiber that's coir I think.
For casing anything between 85% to 92% will be fine, but 85% is supossedly the best after pinning has being initiated. For cakes more is neede, the more the better.
I wouldn't know about the light, the natural light that comes into my room is more than enough for them little mushies, even tho it's not enough for me, so maybe you can go ahead with natural light if this isn't a closet grow.

Hope that was slightly helpful

thanks NeedMoreSleep and DeepMan, appreciate the advice. I'm doing cakes now, and plan on my next 6-8 jars going to casings. I guess I need around 90% - 95% humidity for cakes...will that work ?

As far as the flashlight goes....I leave it on about 5 hours at a time, and I've got lots of batteries !

Thanks

Your best bet is to get the humidity as high as possible. You see, when you case the mycelium is protected from evaporation, but this is not the case with cakes. The water in them evaporate, and also, the cakes absorb water from the air to grow. Just try for 100%, but 95% will also work.

Always remember: Your myc is helping you, he wants to grow more than you do want it to :flowerchild:

Oh, and a few minutes a day is enough lighting, even tho 12/12 is the perfect stance.

I wish you the best of luck, be patient, the first time is the most difficult
