Pint Jars?
    #4084767 - 04/22/05 01:39 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Is there any real disadvantage to using pint jars, as opposed to half pint jars, of course?

I thought that perhaps it would just mean longer colonization times, but then again, for right now, my friend is only going to be growing the PF cakes, instead of any more advanced methods, and perhaps the bigger PF cakes would equate into more shrooms, since there would be a higher surface area.... Is there any actual disadvantage?

Time, Time, Time. Depending on what your starting from (spores, agar, Liquid Culture)...if your starting from spores though, its gonna run you at least 2 weeks, probably more like 3-6. You could use it though, with 5 inoculation points and LC...things would be quick enough if you make sure water content is perfect and incubate at good temps. Of course more mushrooms cause more substrate...would it be twice as many cause twice as much substrate? Probably not if fruiting them as cakes and not casing tem.

Id highly suggest moving to whole grains. Very easy and all you need is a PC. Not having a PC's the only reason you should stick with the PF Tek.

Growing with bags, start to finish (including my new grain and substrate prep)
Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..

longer colonization times = more chance of contams or the jar stalling. It is also hard to get the water amount correct. I had a few jars stop growing before they where fully colonized. I blame it on the water level.

See, this is basically what I had questions about, that it would be harder to keep the balance between one's substrate mix, and the higher chance of contaminations....

Could at least the higher risk of contamination be counteracted by inoculating more of one's syringe into the jar, and by growing a more aggressive colonizer? Then its would just be an issue of making sure the water is correct....

My friend just got a pressure cooker (), but he has never used one before, and is relatively  new to growing, and it has been a few years since the last time that he has... I think he's starting off easy and slowly building his experience... It won't be too long before he's experimenting with everything...
