Why?
    #4084014 - 04/22/05 07:41 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

do mushrooms grow to maturity in one morning outside, but take 4-10 days indoors?

Why should they be picked before the veil opens? I let a few grow to maturity just out of curiousity, and because I always see a few in the 'sea of shrooms' pics. Some reasons I thought of:

1) Similar to setting seed, displaces energy and no new growth begins.
2) Spores disrupt mycellium, possibly causing contams.

The pins grew in three different stages on my cake, then stopped, so I did the ice-water soak, and now the cake is even more loaded.  Would this be my second or fourth flush?

Thanks for putting up with my noob ramblings

Myth...No actual chemical reason, people just don't like spores everywhere, they say it's messy

When you take prints you want the print either right as the veil tears or when it matures....people have their different opinions and suggestions, i just make them right after or during maturity....
Trying to take print when the cap overmatures is kinda hard, it drops spores irregular-ly...(all over) and sometimes all/most spores are dropped so you don't get a nice dark print...

Rephrase, i'm lost

Basically...If you're not taking prints then either let it mature out (gain mass and alkoids) or just pick early to avoid spore mess, it's all based on opinion.

They don't add a contam. factor....they're just messy when you've got lots of shrooms maturing...

Un-necessary. All you did was give it a cold-shock and dunked it.

Dunking increases water content, mushies are 92% water. That'll get the water they need now. And you initiated pinning by making it cold.

Incubate at 82-84F and fruit at 72-74F (notice that 10F drop)

P.Cubes typically just need a 10F drop in temp. to initiate pinning, some like to cold-shock....I use to think it helped, but all it really does it delay pinning. I.e, incubate at the right temps. and fruit at the right temps. and you shouldn't have a prob...

Thanks for the detailed response

Yes, the spores were quite messy, they covered most of the other fruits, giving them a blackish appearence when dried.  I also noticed that no new pins would grow where the spores had dropped.

I'd rather have a few strong, heavy guys than a couple extra weak little guys  but that's just my personal preference.

I fear my landlord busting in, so there is no heating element or elaborate set-up...yet.  Most of the stems retained their white color when dried but a couple took on an almost flourescent blue, I hope these to be more potent.  I've heard cooler temps produce more potent fruits.

How many times can a cake be dunked?  Until it contams I suppose.

About the growth rate. I've noticed that a patch can spring up overnight in woods.

and those shrooms that pop up over night, we talking lawn shrooms? cause cubes won't do that.

Haha, not quite...

I read in adv. cult. (still reading) about how different Ph levels effect amounts of pysiloben/cin/beaocrystin in mushrooms...Good stuff so far
Better nutes would help as well..

Np,

Yup, lawn shrooms. Never had the joy of finding them in their native habitat.

I was thinking of adding powdered Bee Pollen to the mist for added nutes, sounds like a disaster waiting to happen LoL
