I used to dumpster all the time. Baked goods are the best, muffins and bagles and kookies. sometimes you find good fruit and veggies. It's pretty easy to tell whats good and whats not. and when you're hungry, most of what you find (other than meat and dairy, of course) is going to be good. I used to score brownies out of the 7 11 dumpster alot too.
btw, I was homless with no job. It was'nt just cause I was cheap.

yeah, the only dumpster meat I would touch was the individually wraped breakfast-lunch meals they keep under heatlights at gas stations and throw out in the evenings. They were good If you got them right after they trough them out. You could tell if they were still warm. I knew one market that kept there old doughnuts on racks in a metal box out behind the store, it looked like it was closed up, but you could turn the box from the wall and open it up and get all the doughnuts you want. Not exactley healthy, but I did'nt have a stove to cook any veggies on, either.

One time It was raining out and cold as hell (Seattle in Feburary) and It was about 4am and I was tired and drunk and had no blanket to sleep with, so I searched dumpsters behind a sporting goods store and a department store. The dumpsters for both stores where together and in one of them I actually found A huge blue blanket. It was alittle wet from the rain, but it was better than nothing that night. I used it, slept, and got rid of it the next day. It was an incredible blessing at the time. The dumpster can be your friend if you let it.

You only go for stuff that is either still sealed up in plastic, or fruit and vegetables. You don't eat the skin of the stuff you pull out, you eather cook it or peel of the skin, so what you are eating was never actually in direct contact with anything in the dumpster. Your biggest concern is makeing sure you wash your hands after retrieveing th food, no the food itself. There is a stigma about it and it's certainly not socially popular, but when your hungary in a pinch it's not so bad. Better than being hungary anyway. I was pulling brownies out of a 7-11 dumpster once and a girl sitting in her car in the parking lot saw me, and told my friend she would give me a couple bucks if I got out of the dumpster, so I grabed my brownies, took the money, went inside and bought a fountain soda, and had a sugary supper. I've also gone to fast food resteraunts and out-dore dinning resteraunts and waited for people to leave thier leftovers, and then go snatch them up once they split. The employeeys at most place's hate this shit and run you out of there pretty quick, but you still get your food most the time so it's no big deal. I did know a denny's while I was on maui that would let my friend and I help ourselves to the stuff people would leave if we would come late at night, they thought it was fucked up, sure, but they did'nt care if thats what we wanted to do. Shitty deny's pancakes are the best when you're really hungary and they're free.

I do it when I want to travel for free. I love to get on the road and see the world, I also love to not have a job. This is a recipe for dumpster necesity. It goes a little further than being a crackhead or wanting to save a few bucks.
I also love hitting up soup lines and free meals. They're usually better than what I got at home anyway.

the people you see on the sides of the roads in the morning holding signs, in general, have no motivation as well as no job. They have become content in the lifestyle they lead, and it has become stagnant. What seperates someone like myself from that image is motivation and purpose. For them this is a lifestyle, for me, it's a resorce.
I only do this shit when i'm traveling. I'm in one spot now, about to go to school, and looking for a job. I always make time for travel, and instead of spending all my money on it, I try to be as self sufficient as possible, and usually get it done close to free. It's about being resorcefull and not leting pride or finances steal my good time and enjoyment of life.
