Intro + ID help...my frist PNW hunt!
    #4083083 - 04/21/05 09:39 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

First things first I?d like to introduce myself.  I?m a novice mushroom hunter but very eager to learn more.  I stumbled across this site while doing some research and found it to be an amazing tool.  I?m a Pacific North-Westerner and from reading through some of the previous posts it appears there is quite an amazing community here.

Well, now to the meat of the post.  I just ordered Mushroom John?s book, but after the spring sighting posts, recent rains we had, and the wonderful sunshine I figured I?d take a stroll around some of my local parks and see what I could find.  While most everywhere was getting a bit too dried out to be fruitful, I did run across a few decaying, yet interesting specimens.  While I don?t think that any of them are active, but I figured I?d post them for fun and future reference of myself and others.  The first two are just random pictures; the others are the ones I?m more curious about.  I hope that my pictures and short location descriptions are enough for a proper identification (I?m attempting to follow the rules but admit I?m a n00b and these specimens are not optimal ).

Speciman C: Could these be dried out liberty caps (possibly blown off their stem to disperse spores)?

Specimen 1 is a Lepiota of some sort. You'd need to get a spore print to start identification.

Specimen 2 is too out of focus to even guess at.

Specimens 3(A) & 4(B) both look like Cortinarius species at first glance. Based on that you should have noted the types of trees growing nearby.

Specimen 5(C) is a relative of the puffballs. If you look at the last photo you can see that there are no gills inside the cap. Instead you have a fairly uniform spore mass, typical of the puffballs.

Happy mushrooming!
