yellowing tobacco leaves
    #4081284 - 04/21/05 03:07 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Pretty n00bish question...but 2 of my large leaves on my Nicotiana tobaccum are turning yellow, is it most likely because of overwatering? How can i get these guys back to green? I haven't overwatered them, but i've only had em for a week or so. I cut a couple smaller yellow leaves off, let em dry and smoked them. The leaves when dried are translucent (or transparent, whichever), the smoke is nice but the taste wasn't as full.

Ok thank you, i was thinking it might be the nitrogen. I tried to put a small amount of the fertilizer i have in the water (need to get better fertilizer), so it could get at least some nutrients.

if the leaves turn yellow and fall off quickly, usually over watering or cold snap.

if the leaves turn pale or yellow after a while it's nitrogen or similar deficiency.

if you've only had them a week then it's probably climate adjustment or over watering.

no one ever thinks they are watering too much. really. :smirk:

and normal tobacco turns a different color when it's ready to be harvested. maybe that could be a consideration.??

good luck

it's always been kinda funny to me that over watering and under watering on some plants causes the almost same reaction.
you then have to just know what you did wrong, i.e. i watered three times a week on a cold rainy week.... i probably over watered.

but,
too much nitrogen will burn the tips of the leaves.... and cause super green growth..... and too much stretching..... and maybe cause the leaves to curl up or under. finally plant death... not so much yellowing.
(example)-
dogs peeing on bushes and killing them is basically nitrogen burn.

If they are old and at th eend of the season i welcome yellowing leaves...
lower chlorophyl means smoother smoke.

yellowing from top down nitrogen. yellowing from bottom up phosphorus.

Yes I have also heard that excessive nitrogen can cause the leaves to become to rank for smoking. At this stage they are good for an insecticidal spray

The bottom leaves turn yellow with no nitro. The plant transports it to the new growth.
