can you dry shrooms with a Magic Chef food dehydrator?

is it possible to use one without damaging the potency (to a noticeable degree) or would I have to somehow disable the heat element.. I don't know exactly how warm it gets.

edit: mistakenly put "dehumidifier" instead of "dehydrator"

Buy a thermometer, place it in your food dehydrator and see how hot it really gets during a test run.  I have a food dehydrator that gets too hot if the top is put on(140ish) so I run it without a cover and it works great.  It gets up to about 105-110 but never any hotter then that.

word.. what brand is yours?

I just finished reading Agar's post about his dehydrator and it sounds like a pretty good plan, but the model I'm considering using (if my roommate lets me, heh) is a Magic Chef, not the sort he used..

I'm trying to research it now..

anyone else ever used one?

click
you want one with an adjustable thermostat.
no higher than 100 F.
the model i have will do 95

Nesco American Harvest is the one agar has several of.
great machine-
you can stack 12 trays on top of each other, too.

do check your local thrift store, though;
people always throw worthless shit like that out.

I have heard this so many time before but have never seen anyone provide me proof that over 100 F is bad.  I am not doubting your statement but do you have any supporting documentation?

Like I said I run mine at 105-110 and do not have a problem. Some of the older books I have read state anything over 115 is bad.  But I have seen others that claim anything under 140 is okay.  What is the truth?

I'm not sure but I definitely don't want to jeopardize my minimal flush with good ol' thermal death, so I won't even bother trying..

I guess I'm just going to fan-dry them for a couple of days and hope for the best.

If it is a minimal flush why not just eat them wet? If I know I am going to use x amount in the next 3-5 days I don't even dry them, but that is just me. =)
