cubase

soundforge you can get for free, it's just a simple sound editor, you would want to use it with fruityloops or acid pro.

I've heard really good things about cubase, I downloaded a copy of it but i'm yet to try it out and see if it works, so I really can't say much about it, But you can do alot with soundforge and a sequenceing program like the two above.

Also, If you go to www.download.com and go to the audio&video - audio production you can get some free digital toys to play with. it's mostley simple stuff, but you can do some cool things with some of it. Drum machines, digital scratching utilitys, etc.

I guess I would start there and see what you can find that is usefull for what you are trying to do.
