Price depends on a lot of factors... like options on a car. The electron gun, vacuums and electromagnetic lens are pretty common now so those aren't much unless the best stuff is needed for high resolution imaging. Some new basic systems go for around $500,000. Used, refurbished or homemade can be done for $100k or less. For these, maintenace is the most expensive. I've heard that some people have been able to set them up in basements or garages without much trouble.

Normally, the biggest cost comes when you add on detectors. The one I used has x-ray, backscattered, diffraction and specimen current detection systems. The total price for the JEOL 6500 that I used was over $1.5M about 2 years ago.

Hi, the majority of most of my earlier publications are located at my site at

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/articles.htm

My newer papers are in press and in preparation.

A paper on Psilocybe antioquensis from Banteay Kdei at Angkor Wat will appear in the fall issue of the Journal of medicinal Mushrooms with SEM of P. antioquensis. The longer DNA, SEM Chemical Analysis and Cultivation will appear in the journal Eleusis in about a year and a half. Waiting list, as most journals have. The reason for a long time is the length of thepaper , now 80 pages and not half done., Then will be shortened by the amount of images (many)

mj

I also had a post of some of the toys I get to play with at Chulalongkkorn showing some of the different microscopes and the SEM for the elementals.

I will try to post the URL below as soon as I find it in posts search.

Here is one URL for some of the toys.

I was also looking for my partners new microscope he bought for himself. But cannot find them at the moment.

Hope you enjoy these posts.

mj

Some Boletus edulis and an SEM of them from north of Bangkok.

Well the search only went back to 1000 posts since Thanksgiving of last year. I posted the microscope page between August 12th and December of 2004. So I could not find the page on microscopes. Might look them up in my files later.
