The Power of Words
    #4079079 - 04/20/05 11:37 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

It's funny how you can ask someone a simple question, with no malice intended at all, and that person can go off on you as if you just ripped him/her a new one.

Words are just words. They can only hurt us if we have emotional baggage. But we all have emotional baggage.

We interpret the words spoken to us in an instant, and we react in an instant. And the basis for our reaction is our childhoods, our previous relationships, etc.

The same words spoken to the person who went off on me probably wouldn't have affected another person in the same way.

The old adage still is applicable, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me".... applicable to the extent that we don't take words to heart, and realize language, and context can be easily misconstrued.

I never actually met a person with a "new one". I think it is a legend right up there with the Chupacabra.

Would a colostomy qualify as a "new one"?

Ya know, I am not really sure. We may need a ruling on that.

Nah, a colostomy is merely an extension/displacement of an "old one".

You're probably right and I don't know why anyone would ever get a colostomy but hey, if that's your bag..

If you have some intestines removed, is that a semi-colon?

My apologies to Frog for ruining your perfectly good thread.

I have good genetics. Everyone in my family lives to be quite old. Yup, we are long-livers; except for cousin Nate who died at 14. He was more of a chopped-liver. (Ba-doom-boom)

But can't you deal with sticks and stones and broken bones more easily than the words spewed at you from a loved one?

Words can hurt, but why?

Well, after what happened in my experience, I am going to seriouslly consider a person's words for their actual value rather than how I interpret them, in the future.

I realize this is going to take practice.  I'm not good at "stop and think."  I tend to act and then think.

I think this is also affecting me right now because of the trials I have been in recently.  Those stupid bastards (the prosecutors) say things that aren't true, and the police say things that aren't true, and it really pisses me off.

Well, it's just words.  Why get mad?  Use my own words to even the playing field.  Stupid fuckers.

Don't get mad at words. That is smart.

But don't take words at face value either. Actions speak louder than words. Watch a person's actions... and take their words with a grain of salt.

I take people at word value, which is my shortcoming in a world where people say one thing and mean another.

I'm learning, though. I'm learning.

I swear, if you listen to people's actions, you'll find humans are quite honest... and predictable. The words though... it takes a while to let that go.

You can always work on improving your own ability to communicate, but you can't make others communicate better... so for now, actions speak volumes... even online!
