sawdust packer and paraffin wax
    #4078807 - 04/20/05 08:27 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

ok for packing the sawdust into the log i figured i would use a syringe, 10cc, cut cut the top off so i can stick into the sawdust spawn and plug it into the holes then push the plunger down to pack into my log...what do you guys think, Also one more question all i could find at walmart was paraffin wax can this be used to seal the inoculation points in my logs? can i use any thing else beside cheese wax?

You can use parafin but is is petroleum based.

IIRC, the only organic solution is beeswax.

I'd like to see it in action. I've used sawdust in logs before, and basically it wasn't too tough to just pack the holes by hand. The actual force a standard 10 cc syringe plunger can impart seems like it might be limiting on something like solid sawdust spawn. Could be wrong, let us know what you come up with!

try using a piece of dowel, and just ramming in in with. i guess a plastic syringe would work but wouldnt be particulary easier..the tighter it's packed in...the better. A mallet is good.

instead of wax...plaster might work.... plaster of paris or even good ol ceiling plaster, after all it's only gypsum.
