What's the big deal? If they have roots, chuck 'em in some soil. I imagine ordinary commercial cactus potting mix would be fine. Leave them dry for a while, then start giving them a little bit of water now and then. Bottom-watering will encourage the roots to take hold faster, but you run a higher risk of root-rot. Kick your friend in the balls for wild-poaching peyote.

i don't understand your question airdog, if the baby's have roots just plant them in pots with cactus soil. As pynchon said just water them from the bottom to incourage new roots. use single pots! pynchon, all the peyote we get here comes from the wild...this isn't usa.

AIRDOG's location is in Mexico, according to his profile...my understanding is that peyote is just as endangered there as it is in the US. I'd be happy to hear that I'm wrong, tho'.

Hi AIRDOG. These guys are actually pretty tough. Prune the root system, especially any damaged or unhealthy looking roots, and then let them sit in a warm, dry and low light environment (not darkness!) until all soft or damage part calous over completely. Personally, I would keep them in this condition until the beginning of the next growing season at which time you could pot them up in a gritty, low nutrient potting mix. Keep the soil very slightly moist and never (ever) wet until they grow a new root system. They can also benefit from an occaisonal, light misting of the cactus surface. The main thing you want to avoid when trying to get them to grow new roots and adapt to their new environment is cold and moisture. They will rot fast in this condition. Good luck.

And just as importantly do not forget that this species of cactus is conscious and these guys are in a state of shock. Give them comfort and assurance with your words and thoughts, and keep them in a quiet environment.
