Maybe someday,..... it will be legal?
    #4078021 - 04/20/05 07:01 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

So I was just watching the news and they were saying that in danville illinois, they are lowering the bail of some non violent offenders so that they can aleiviate the capacity of the jails. they feel that they are getting over crowded and are giving their inmates a deal on getting out early.... on top of it they are even working with the inmates to see how much they can really afford. I think maybe this could be the beginning in realizing that people don't need to be locked up for petty crimes (such as possession under certain circumstances) could this be the beginning of the legalization process.... maybe the government is finally getting the picture that they cannot win the "war on drugs"????

Thoughts?

.... it's already full known that they can't win the war on drugs, and terrorism, the idealogy of it is perpetuated for a purpose... we might as well wage war on the sun shining.

It has a little something to do with $$, something to do with enforcing religious beliefs of morality and addiction, something to do with being dickheads, something to do with expanding consciousness, and a lot to do with misinformation.

Their are several threads pertaining to this already.

Its too bad that danville is our only example. The fact is that meth abuse is rampant down there and meth related crimes (ie. burglary and muggings) are common. I prefer to make a distinction between possession and other "non-violent" crimes like vandalism and robbery. I hope that danville is making this distinction as well.

edit: This is also where you may have heard about teachers being given "scratch-n-sniff" stickers to learn the smell of meth. Everyone thinks this is just a crazy overreaching of our government, and it may be, but i know from living in IL that the problem is actually THAT BAD down there.

You know its funny cause I'm actually from the suburbs up north by chicago... but I make my home further south and have lived here for some time (I go to school). And before I moved here... the major problem in the burbs was definitely heroin and cocaine. I had never ever met anyone who was involved with meth or even thought it was a problem... the drug hadn't even crossed my mine. Now I move down state and realize that this problem affects everyone. Virtually all the friends I have down here have tried it or know some one that had huge problems with it. Everything is under lock down.

One time I got sick and needed some sudafed and couldn't find it anywhere on the shelves untill I asked a pharmacist who said they kept it in the pharmacy because people use it for meth production. It's unbelievable the problem with meth down here and other rural areas. And it's even more sick to know that the government is the culprit. They first produced the substance for soldiers fighting in veitnam.

on the news I didn't see what the distinction was that they were making but I hope they are doing it carefully!

No, they aren't. Just because a local news station gives its opinion on something, who knows if even they believe that, doesn't make it even close to being true.

And they are lowering bail? Bail? In California, possession of up to an ounce is punishable by a 50 dollar fine. And if you have an ounce, I have no doubt that you can come up with 5 dollars. Or is 100? Either way, move here.

Yep, ive lived in the northern suburbs all my life and meth is nowhere to be found up here but the people i know who have lived in central IL say it is all over the place down there and its a real problem.

Im all for the release of non-violent (possession) drug offenders but I was just pointing out that this actually is a case where drugs have been detremental to society there. Thats why i implied that it is ironic that central IL has been chosen by the media as a model for releasing non-violent offenders.
