Hunting Cats????
    #4077963 - 04/20/05 06:47 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I don't know if any one has heard about wisconsin wanting to legalize the hunting of cats.... whether or not they have a collar as long as they're unsupervised.

I myself believe it's wrong and there are plenty of things to hunt that are overpopulated. In addition, i'd hope that the reason for hunting would be for the source of food and I myself have a cat and know there isn't much meat on 'em bones.

But there's also to sides to a story/conflict

what are you opinions?

Depends...

What's the estimated population of cats in the area?

Are they overpopulated?

Are they infringing on another creatures niche in the local environment, or are they providing a benefit to it in any manner?

How does cat taste? (I have 2 cats, but curious anyway... ultimately when you look at everything else we eat, it makes no difference).

Why are we worried about the ability to hunt cats when the media portrays our position as severe in terms of the threat terrorism poses against our nation?

odd. But I agree I wouldn't kill an animal for anything other than food. Also they don't care if it doesn't have a collar that's kinda messed up peoples pets would get killed.

Not even to save your own life? Or to save another person's life?

I love animals and all.... but,.

As usual, everyone is only hearing half the story on the news.

People go to wisconsin from all around like chicago where i live to let cats loose. They then kill all kinds of animals and upset the ecosystem there. Cat owners have a hard time believing this but they have virtually exterminated entire species of birds in certain areas.

One thing that is also not reported is that several states already allow the hunting of feral cats. The news reports make wisconsin out to be a rogue state that will start kicking in the doors of cat owners and exterminating cats in a kitty holocaust. This is just not the case.

The fact of the matter is that wisconsinites have been putting down stray cats for years and all this law does is call attention to what is already going on. They arent hunting cats for fun. The animals have become a nuisance and, unfortunately, there needs to be some kind of control.

Theirs a tough path ahead for you   especially when  you value an animals life over your own, or another human's

Anyway.... that's more then likely just a few of the individuals killing the animals with collars (on the assumption it's occuring), as I doubt a state would suggest that it is ok to knowingly go out and kill someone's pet cat, nor would people sanction that.

Not really a pacifist I'm not against violence. I just don't think I have any right to determine who/what lives and dies ... if it is my choice I choose to do nothing and let nature take its course.

THis is some good discussion..... It's good to hear from some one that this directly affects.... and to get the full story. I do think it's kind of messed up to kill cats with collars though... they could just as easily return them to the owner... maybe give people options for "what to do if you don't want your cat" type of thing.... a protocol if you will

No I eat meat I like meat but that's were it becomes a little weird to justify. I'm not really choosing which animal gets killed I'm choosing one that's already dead.

PS sorry to be taking this post off topic like this

Cats are one of the few animals that kill for fun. Because of Feral cats in Australia the wallaby has been turned nearly extinct and several other small creatures.

Cats upset the ecosystem because they are predators and when theirs too many predators they will exterminate entire species.

obviously if the issue is abandoned pets, the collar part of that makes sense if you think about it.

an abandoned pet might not first be relieved of its color.. thus a feral cat with a collar.

sick people do stuff like this for fun. sensible people do stuff like this when there is a problem that does not have another reasonable solution.

my $0.02 as a cat owner:

If they are a pest (severe overpopulation)
If you need to display some hunting skills before getting a permit
Then it can be OK
But never when they wear a collar.

I lay emphasis on the need for hunting skills though. Hunting needs be done humanely, which in my view is a heart-shot or a headshot. (or the right # buckshot if you can't aim) You can't have teens roaming the neighborhood shooting known pets with a BB gun.

In some part of australia there's a huge Cane Toad pest. There's about one cane toad for every 5x5 yards of area  and they are almost wiping out the ecosystem. Beautiful animals as they are at some point you have to intervene.

I love cats but they're a huge problem in some areas.
