Hollow Mushrooms
    #4077128 - 04/20/05 03:14 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So whats the deal with hollow mushrooms, I noticed that the fruits I had in my terraruim started to develop this sort of spotting look where the fluffy mycellium usually grows, but everything else looks fine on them, until I picked them and gave them a little more squeeze than usual, by accident of course, so I decided to pull on that one in two, and noticed that it was basically hollow what causes this and how can I prevent it, are the mushrooms still edible?

i've heard certain strains such as koh sami are suppose to be hollow inside. i guess someone came out with the super strain koh sami that was solid as a rock. personally i wouldn't worrie about it. my last batch of south americans had some hollow ones and they were fine. actually i've never heard of a hollow mushroom being a problem.

I have had the last few flushes of some eq that are hollow. I don't recall if they were that way a year or so ago when I last had some. Potency is still very good but it does cut down on expected yields.

Most strains are hollow. PF classis is a solid strain.

Dude, all of m friend's shrooms have been hollow. I've only heard of a few strains that arent hollow.
They are fine, beleive me.

Substrate plays a part in stem thickness. I've had strains that have hollow stems produce pretty thick stems on horse poo. They were still hollow, but nowhere near as hollow as say, grown on PF cakes or WBS.

It is the nature of the species to be a least a bit hollow, in fact quite a bit hollow in most cases I beleive.

As it happens I had something like the spotted bases though, is it little brown spots that you can only see when you've smooshed the fluff stem down? I trawled the boards and posted for help on that a lot but got nothing definite. I put it down to a mild bacterial contamination known as 'blight'. The shrooms were fine though, the bacteria seems harmless (to me anyway) especially if dried before consumption, but if that stuff gets worse it will be the eventual death of a casing in a very dodgy looking last flush (blue/brown streaked gnarled up shrooms - I didnt keep those ones :/).. I think the humidity was the main reason for it.. Only got it with the mexican cubensis strain though..

It is little brown spots on the base of the shroom stem where the fluffy mycellium was, but I dont have to smush the mycellium down in order to see it, the fluffy myceliiium just isnt there anymore and you can clearly see the spots, its on some but not others and it was there during the first flush too

i wouldnt worry about it, they are still good eating the only downfall is that your dry yield expectations won't be what you expected.
