So is perlite all I need to keep the humidity at 90%?

Yes. (And perhaps some misting here and there, depending on your set-up.)

As long as you perlite is damp and when you fan you mist lightly, you will have no problem keeping RH around 90+.

cool.

one thing I am confused about though, I'm going to grow my kits soon.

my grow kit instructions say to put a little perlite in a small container in the terrarium, but all the cake methods say to put a layer of perlite on the bottom of the terrarium.

So which should i do?

Bluedog, I am sure there are many successful ways of doing it but I personally put a layer (2 inches or so) of perlite on the bottom of my FC. If you are growing cakes I place the cake, after a dunk and roll, in a petri dish filled with damp/sterile bed-a-beast. I place the dish on top of the damp perlite. One note is that if you use jar lids instead of petri dishes make sure you wrap it in Al foil or else the lid will rust, trust me. For casing I use a different set up but if I had to I would still place perlite on the bottom of the terrarium, get it damp, and place the casing container on top.
