Sclerotia substrate water content differs between vendors
    #4075970 - 04/20/05 06:33 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

There is a big difference in the advised water content for rye grass seed from 2 vendors
www.mushmush.nl are saying 163ml to 100g rye grass seed
www.sporeworks.com are saying 100ml to 100g rgs

Sporeworks do not mention sclerotia in its rgs mix but you do not hear of many people growing cubensis on it, and I think in the past it was mentioned on the site.

Which is best? the difference is huge. In the past I have not found my stones to be large or potent and want to get it right, can't even remember what mix I used now.

I am still surprised at the lack of interest in sclerotia and the lack of experimentation with substrates. I am going to try it on pasta if my syringe is still viable.

the faq here says twice the volume of seed to water, I hate working in volumes with easily compressible bulky substances

The tek on the Sporeworks site was written by me under my first user name (compiler) some time ago. I know this formula works. As for the other I have not tried it. Our sclerotia formula bag works excellent for this and is far better than rye grass seed. Click here to view the product.
Workman did experiments and found it is more biologically efficient. A search should show his posts on it. It is not well suited for fruiting of mushrooms.

Looks good but a single bag would cost me $96 to the EU due to the shipping! How much do your bags weigh and what is the expected yield?
I presume you won't be sharing the secret recipie

actually the best sclerotia substrate from my experiments proved to be a m mix
of RYE BERRIES and MILLET.

yep you read right, from what i can tell it outperforms rye grass seed without any problem.

just take a look at the yumminess of the mix:

dont it make your mycological nerves drool?

I know Una had great results on millet. Una also mentioned that it is good to keep the substrate airy. Pasta spirals are nice and airy and if I grew them on it I wouldn't even bother with the painstaking harvesting, I'd just eat them with the pasta, maybe with some tomato sauce.

I tried the whole grain rice myself both brown and white. The stones only really formed on the outside of it so I do think it needs to be airy.

Has anybody else substate results, good or bad?

Ouch! That is a lot for shipping. The site calculates to you via UPS air service. You can email us for a postal service shipping quote which will be a lot less. The postal service offers air and ground and both are less than UPS charges but they are not as quick.
As far as yield estimates go... I will have to search for workmans post.

Here is one of workmans posts that I found in a quick search.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...true#Post736237

Edit:
Quote:

167 grams of fairly clean fresh sclerotia from the above bag. The large protruding sclerotia were easy to harvest, but the smaller ones were more troublesome. The substrate is very sticky inside and small sclerotia was time consuming to harvest. Most of the sclerotia formed on the outside edge of the substrate with very a very few small ones inside the substrate block.

Sclerotia is about 30% dry mass so the 167 grams should yield about 50 dry grams or 1.7 dry ounces.

Consistancy is like modeling clay and appears to consist mostly of rice

Seems like the results I also found with rice, very little forming in the middle. There are also a few threads describing how it seems to work better up against the side of a glass jar. And comments on introducing extra objects for it to "grow up against" in bags or jars.

Just checked and my syringe proved viable. had only 1ml left and I sucked in 11ml and squirted 1 in some honey water. 3 days on and there are a few little clouds. The syring is 3 years 2months old, was stored in a fridge for 1 year and the rest at room temp. pretty impressive! syringe was from sporeworks
