Bury me softly in this womb I give this part of me for you Sand rains down and here I sit Holding rare flowers In a tomb...in bloom
Down in a hole and I don?t know if I can be saved See my heart I decorate it like a grave You don?t understand who they Thought I was supposed to be Look at me now a man Who won?t let himself be
Down in a hole, feelin? so small Down in a hole, losin? my soul I?d like to fly, But my wings have been so denied
Down in a hole and they?ve put all The stones in their place I?ve eaten the sun so my tongue Has been burned of the taste I have been guilty Of kicking myself in the teeth I will speak no more Of my feelings beneath
Down in a hole, feelin? so small Down in a hole, losin? my soul I?d like to fly but my Wings have been so denied
Bury me softly in this womb Oh I want to be inside of you I give this part of me for you Oh I want to be inside of you Sand rains down and here I sit Holding rare flowers (oh I want to be inside of you) In a tomb...in bloom Oh I want to be inside...
Down in a hole, feelin? so small Down in a hole, losin? my soul Down in a hole, feelin? so small Down in a hole, outta control I?d like to fly but my Wings have been so denied

the only popular Seattle band (I avoid using the term "grunge") of the time that I really appreciated. everyone knew he was going to die, but even when it did happen it was really a downer. he lasted so long given his lifestyle. I saw Jerry Cantrell live on his solo tour about a week after Layne died. he played about half his own songs and half AIC songs (which he mostly wrote or co-wrote with Layne). someone in the crowd threw a RIP Layne shirt up to him, and he held it up to the crowd for a brief moment of tribute/silence and thanked the guy for providing the shirt. it was a downer moment but provided much needed closure.
btw, Rob Trujillo was the bassist on that tour before he joined Metallica. I also saw Rob with Ozzy a few years earlier. he's a great performer depending on his bandmates..don't care to see him with Metallica, though.

Oh I heard he was a herion addict but I just didn't remember hearing all the details about it, yea that is sad...I liked them somewhat..but started getting into other music about that time... Ricochet> that would have been cool to see Jerry Cantrell too as well...

if you've actually listened to AIC, it's fairly obvious Layne (and Jerry at the time, no longer) were heroin addicts. read the lyrics to just about any song, especially the one posted in this thread "Down in a Hole" and more obviously "Junkhead" but I think DiaH hits deeper to the core of the problem.
fyi, Dirt is a great album. however, the Jar of Flies EP is where it's at.

Oh yea thats right...Jar Of Flies was one of the better ones..I got a lot of my cd's from them stolen or lost over the years...so it has been a while as well...I have been into so many other bands after that it sometimes is hard to recall all the time...but then that was a long time ago already...

Black Muddy River comes to mind but back then I tried to stay away from the more dooming jams. Maybe its worth a revisit. That was late 80s though.

yeah, the uncut version of the unplugged video is interesting and kinda sad because he fucks up the beginning of Sludge Factory and causes the band to have to start the song over. pretty sure the DVD release (I know the audio CD did) edited it to appear seamless and that he was doing better than in reality.
you should check out Layne's side project Mad Season (yes, referring to when shrooms are in full bloom ) (with Pearl Jam's guitarist Mike McCready and the Screaming Trees {another great Seattle band of that time} drummer Barrett Martin. they only recorded one album and released a live video, and Layne appeared much worse off than in the AIC Unplugged video even though they were recorded around the same time. it was released on VHS (probably on DVD now) years back. he looked so frail and was wearing shades the whole time (like the AIC Unplugged) and a LS shirt/sweater and looked like he was struggling to hang on. that he lived for ~6 more years was amazing.
edit: I now remember acquiring the rehearsals for that recorded live Mad Season show. that was pretty depressing, as they hadn't really played (m)any shows together live and were trying to get their act together. I mean, McCready had substance abuse problems but had mostly worked them out iirc. Layne was a mess at times. really upsetting.

The MTV unplugged dvd does show the sludge factory fuck up. He doesn't wear shades throughout the entire set either just the first couple of songs. The mad season thing sounds cool too. AIC was the best seatle group.

yeah, I couldn't remember if he wore shades throughout the unplugged vid but thought he did. it's been years since I've seen it, though. agreed on them being the best band from that area at the time although the Melvins are very much up there for me, but I always think of them independently of the usual bands mentioned.

AIC great, underappreciated band. I hear so many bands today that were clearly influenced by their sound. And Layne had an awesome voice that gave you chills at times. Hopefully in death he found the peace that eluded him in life.

You knew him? Wow......you feel the loss more than all of us, esp. considering you found out on your birthday. His life was so sad....no one derserves that, and he seemed like a really nice guy to boot. I hope he's finally at peace.
