Woodchips
    #4067403 - 04/18/05 01:11 AM (19 years, 3 days ago)

When I use my spawn, how should I go about cleaning the wood chips/saw dust?...Should I soak it in water for 24 hours and then use it...

And what about the dust? Soak it or no?...

And can I use lc to inoculate woodchips saw dust? lol

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to ediables, i'm trying to...open up to new types of mushies...

Well , thnkx, any links concerning this post would be apprecatied

For the wood chips: soak for 24 h, drain it for one hour.
For the saw dust: just add water to achieve 60-65% moisture content.

Mix the two together with your favorite additive (I use wheat bran) and you're ready to sterilize.

I never tried lc inoculation but grain spawn has always worked very well for me.

I use pieces of beech wood chips that are larger that the ones you describe. Soaking for 24 h. is more than enough, after draining the water content is approximately 60%. Others have success with soaking the chips for 12 h only. If you keep the wood chips in the water for longer than a few days they will start to ferment a bit producing an unpleasant smell.

I add 10-20% dry weight wheat bran to the mixed wood chips and sawdust plus a bit of water to maintain the 60-65% moisture of the whole substrate. I buy it at an organic food / health food store.

Sterilize for 3 hours in the pc.

"Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms", by Stamets has tons of information and is well worth to buy if you're interested in growing gourmets.

No, I tried to find gypsum but none of the hardware stores or garden centers carry it. I used to add 1% of lime to the mix but since I finished it I don't add any buffers to my substrate. I find it hard to get and not worth the effort of visiting lots of stores.

Owl,
What edible do you fruit on that mixture (without gypsum)?

So far I have successfully fruited Oysters (Pl. ostreatus), Reishi and Shiitake on that mixture.

At the moment I also have Nameko pins growing on the same mixture but they are growing so slowly that I'm not sure if they will make it to mature fruits. I last week inoculated grain spawn of King Oyster (Pl. eryngii) and Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) on the mixture and they are colonizing it very fast. It's my first attempt to grow these species, so I don't know how well they will fruit.

Yes Owl, It's a matter of trial and error. How is your fruiting chamber look like?

I have two separate clear rubbermaids (220 liter each) hooked up to an ultrasonic humidifier running for 10 minutes every two hours. Both rubbermaids are also hooked up to a battery of aquarium air pumps running 24/7. The temperature is 18 degrees C. Light comes indirectly from a window facing the north. I didn?t know the relative humidity since I have a crap hygrometer that I bought at a pet shop. I only know that RH is above 80%.

My urge to grow fungi is much bigger than the capacity of the rubbermaids so I am often forced to fruit my sawdust/wood chip blocks in a bin with geolite on the bottom that I spray 3-4 times a day. It often works better than the rubbermaid set-up.

nostic, i can send some bran, as for soaking, just soak until they sink, which usually is only a few hours, no need for this 24 hour shit. As for cleaning, This is a pic of a project, its got leaves, stems, dirt, bark, wood chips. Its everything that the chipper spit out. it was soaked for about an hour then brought to a boil then drained for ten mins then pc'ed for an hour. Like my jar, its a vase with a tyvek lid.

Opposed to clean

shit, im still working on the 10'x 20' sheet of tyvek, so i am good. What the hell are o/i prints, wait never mind. Im all good. Just ports and shiitakes here. hit me up with your addy on the pm and i will send out a bag. Its cheap, 1$bag so dont worry about it. I find that 1/4th cup to 4 cups of wood works fine, stamets says 1:4 but this is too rich, i will have to talk to him.
