How durable are spores?
    #4075048 - 04/20/05 12:53 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I recently tried the micro-karo for the first time, and I think that I might have introduced the sps @ a higher than average temp. If the temp was around 100 F, do you think the mission is SNAFU? I'm at day 2 with no signs of growth. Maybe I'm just not patient, but never hurts to ask. Thanks.
Where u successful on ur 1st attempt @ growth?

Very impatient my brotha. Relax. It'll take up to a week.

Thanks. It wasn't so much that I was being impatient, it was more of an inquiry into how well the spores could withstand the heat that I more than likely subjected them to. But thanks for the encouragement.

How did you come up with 100 F??? Just a wild guess, or did you probe the sub w/ a thermometer???

lol, well you must also consider that the interior of the substrate will most likely be significantly hotter than the outside.  If the outside was 100 F, I'd say start over, your spores are most likely dead.  If the center of your sub was 100 F, I'd say you've got a decent chance enough spores survived to germinate... GL bro :stoned:

i dont get it, i thought spores were made to withstand entering the earths atmosphere. that was the basis of Mckennas theory that fungi are from another planet. now i hear that thermal death is 104F, it doesnt make any sense.

im not sure but im assuming its a matter of hydration.
spores in the jar have been hydrated, on the print they are dry and can last much, much longer.
i suspect they are more heat resistant that way too...

also keep in mind that spores are light and will not create friction upon entering an athmosphere...

That's not true. Most shooting stars you see are in fact tiny particles. From what I remember the way spores could possibly survive are if they are contained within another larger object.

Oh no, not the space theory again. Mushroom spores never came from space. The fungi family stem from the ancestral procaryote urcaryote just like every other living thing on this planet.

Sorry to shatter your hopes, they didn't come from space.

Yeah, it's fun to dream.  But that space thing has got to be McKenna's worst contribution ever, yeck.

I agree, they take you to outer space...  :mushroom2:
