Growing Vegtables, what are you up to ?
    #4072523 - 04/19/05 02:14 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

my peas are up, and I have sparrow netting over them this year, after last years looses.

my red onions are coming on well too, growing quite a lot of onions this year, as there a great crop for storing, and using through winter.

Trying out Brussel sprouts for the first time too, to give me something to be cropping in winter.

I'm growing them in containers on one of my cyan beds, as I'll move them onto the empty patches in the veg plots come Autumn and fruiting time, its a good way to keep the cyan beds from drying out too.

got most of my tomatoes in now, this year I'm going for heavy croppers like "gardeners delight" "big boy (a beef stake)" and "alacanti" (sp? the place in Spain)

not growing any of the older variety's I received from anno last year, as though they were fun to grow, and produced some interesting crops, they were quite light on fruits. And space is limited.

Grown a few in pots though for sale on summer plant stalls, and for friends to try

still have a lot of seedlings to pot on, like lettuce, chili red and green, as well as more toms and lots of herbs.

I think this will be my best veg plot yet, as I have doubled its size, and have more time to spare for them this year.

what is everyone else growing?

if you plant garlic and onions throughout your garden you'll be able to ward off lots of pests.

Well, lets see here. I have Purple Bush Beans, Yard Long Beans, purple basil, a mix called tat soi, red onions, chives and garlic, spinich, Two gangly strawberries (may keep 'em inside), and three heirloom lettuce. Those are all from seed. I saw a few heirloom tomatos at the hardware store, yellow, orange, and purple, I think I may get those too. I have seeds for white cherry, purple plum and german strawberry tomatos, but I think I may save those for indoor over winter 05/06.

Also a bunch of mushroom species: P. ostreatus, djamor, eryngii, L. edodes, Ph. nameko, Ag. subrufescens and brasiliensis, G. frondosa, Stropharia rugosoannulata. Will also be planting morel sclerotia in the garden.

Fourth of July, Green Giant, and a couple other tomatoes in line for transplant now. I will be soon growing my gourds and squash is in the works. I am looking into innovative ways to grow sprouts indoors this year as well. Pumpkins later to come- not yet. Oh- and let's not forget all the cucumbers a man could want. I love your technical layout so far as I can see Gum_clinic. Very nice.

I keep chickens, so I tend to compost all there waste, mixed with kitchen and garden waste, and compost it all. I then add a thick layer in Autumn/winter and dig it in.

i will be using some liquid feeds on the tomatoes, but everything else is reliant on soil nutrients.
