Care to add any?
I would have to disagree. I think all these bands can be easily covered by semi-skilled musicians. Of course, its difficult to replicate exact style but that is why bands like tool shine.
I have to agree with the above poster that Death would be very difficult, if not impossible to cover, especially if you required the guitarist to play and sing at the same time like Chuck. That guy had some weird abilities and i wouldnt be suprised if it somehow resulted in his brain tumor.
I was going to say the same thing earlier. The hardest part about covering a band is not getting all the music down, its producing that same energy they have. And yes, Chuck was quite amazing. Some of his solo's were just so insane, like the one on "Flesh and the Power It Holds". Such a shame he is not with us anymore.
I was thining the same thing, I just didn't know how to say it, so I didn't post it. But your exactly right.

In keeping with the thread theme: King Crimson...um...hmmmm...ok nevermind, kind of bad thread idea.
im suprised such bad thread ideas get such responses...
-------------------- A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

Are you kidding me? The percussion alone for either of these bands would be amazingly daunting for any "semi-skilled musician"... As far as the guitars, yeah I've heard people play Tool riffs and what-not, and it does seem relatively easy, but I'd like to see someone replicate drumming on Tool's "46&2" or "Lateralus". And I've seen Tool twice, so I know it's not just "studio tricks". Danny Carey played both of those songs at each show, and pulled it off even better than what he layed down in the studio. I have yet to see TMV live, so my opinion of them may change. We'll see at Bonnaroo...

Thats exactly it. Most anything can be easily covered nowadays (even the most technical compositions) but its the style and feeling that differentiates the great bands. Many people cannot even really detect it but, of course, those who partake in psychedelics and who are sensitive and capable of indulging in the nuances of the musical creation know exactly whats going on.
Adamist, Ive seen people pull off Carey very well and very precisely. His true talent lies in his ability to "breathe with the music" and to entwine his playing with the organic movement of the band's music as a whole.
Contrary to exact technical proficiancy, this requires the musician to deviate from strict timing and to enter the flow and energy being created by the combined efforts of the group...as nature intended.
So i guess you are right...the best bands are the hardest to cover. :p

Fucking idiots, huh? thats a prett bold judgement to make. The doors are one of the easiest bands to cover I can think of. I'll give you hendrix, but "fucking idiots" is just not necessary.

hendrix is mainly improvisational stuff, well atleast the live stuff is. Cover it note for note if you have no creative insight.
King Crimson is tough shit son, complex timings, odd and instantaneous transitions, very fluent and jazzy rythmics. man, fuck tha doors.

Hendrix has been covered countless times. Check out the Red Hot Chili Peppers' version of "Fire" or any number of SRV's Hendrix covers. And the Doors were actually covered by Creed.

the doors wouldn't be difficult at all, in my mind...
i'd say on-the-corner era Miles Davis - basically any fusion jazz, would rank up there as the hardest to cover.
that and just absurdely fast speed/death metal.. crazy norwegians.
