Question for the uber-experts
    #4072445 - 04/19/05 01:53 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I'm wondering...

there are so many knowledgable people on here, people who are so well versed in shroom behavior that they could answer any question that comes up on this board without much thought, the cream of the cream, so to speak, the uber-experts...

so the q i'd like to ask of the uber experts is...

When you are stumped, who do you ask for advice?

Yea, I wanna know this one too!
I'd imagine they'll say good ol' hard work and research, but we're all a bunch of lazy hippies right?

Dang.. good question.  Probably a book they have about growing?  I think no matter how good you are at it.. there are still some times where praying to god is the only thing that'll make something happen .  hehe

Mike,

who do you consider to be an expert.  :smirk:

---

I have a list of names of people that I consider to be very knowledgeable in mycology...but I'm not sure that I would consider them to be an expert.

If they are anything like me...they learn from everyone...and read everything they can get their hands on.

Then there is the great thinkers...these guys come up with new ideas and inventions that blows my fricken mind.
People like Agar...for example.

When I first started in mycology...I asked people like Anno and Workman questions when I couldn't find or figgure out what I needed to know.
Most of my questions...I'd find the answers to...myself.

Anyone that doesn't try and learn something new every day...isn't a very smart person in my book.

It's all trial and error...and learning from others.

A good mycologist is someone that is eager to learn new methods to improve his knowledge, to experiment with new things and to become a better grower...that would be me.

An expert is somone like Paul Stamets...not me.

I ask the Shroomery :P lol. I agree totally with Roadkill. I respect all the mods on this site greatly and they are reliable sources of information. Even so, sometimes they may not know, or their opinion will differ. That is why most of us learn from everyone and everything we can, like Roadkill said. And after you read thru the boards here for an extended time like most of us have, you will definitely discover people who you respect and/or admire. And I don't mean moderators here. Scatmanrav is one of the most helpful people on the site, who I greatly respect since his methodology is similar to mine, and he is not a mod.

Given a long enough amount of time and enough replies, I believe you can find the answer to anything you would ever want to know. Which is usually easier than finding someone who has a doctorate in biology/mycology hehe.

Apparently we read the same books  This is what actually got me started in mycology.  Whenever I see or hear something interesting I always want to learn more and more and more.  I probably spend at least 20 hours a week just reading about crap that looked or sounded interesting....  Somehow research on astronomy brought me here... and I never left :stoned:

A lot of the knowledge is out there if you want to read it. I think it was Einstein that said that true genius is the ability to make connections. When I asked about mycelias ability to decompose cellulose, well, maybe their haven't been any studies done about it, but someone had a picture of mycelia running through some cash, so it was shown that yes, it could. Recognzing things in abstract makes it a lot easier to answer questions that relate to related matters.
