If you had to choose between 78 or 88 to incubate at, which would you choose, why? and - would it be a good idea to start incubation at high temps and then move to lower after spore germination or is this going to bother the mycelium? tia.

at this point i think we can be relatively certain seperation exists as a fallacy of finite perception, and the only barrier to infinite creativity is a preimposed notion of certainty and artificial conditioning. nothing is without origin

78 is better than 88. Mycelium will generate a lot of heat at the later stages of incubation, and will probably end up in the 80's even if you can only provide 78.

High 80's is not healthy for growth, it's terrific for bacteria though.

To find a place to live between the negatives and positives.

My choice would be 88. why 88??? I'll tell ya "y"
1) the ten degree drop will be much easier to achieve
2)optimum temperatures are actually 82-86 and i usually incubate around 88-90(not on purpose my computer monitor just gets that hot)
3) to you last question i would just keep the temperatures the same threw the whole run until you are ready to fruit.
hope this helped.

The answer to which is better depends on the depth of substrate you are trying to incubate and if the container is on carpeting or hoisted up in the air. A large bed tends to produce quite a bit of heat.

3" or deeper and on well carpeted floor - 78
less than 3" deep and hoisted up - 88
less than 3" deep and on carpeted floor - 88
3" or deeper and hoisted up - probably 78

Incubation is a tricky business. If you don't do it right, you will not run the casing and suffer a HUGE loss of yield. I often see trays on this site that were not incubated correctly and have poor pin sets as a direct result. I believe that casing run substrate temperature can make or break any size tray and should be carefully monitored. A single drop down to say 75F during the casing run can, depending on the substrain, switch cubensis mycelium out of vegetative growth overnight and it'll never re-enter vegetative growth even if you raise the temperatures back up. I've seen it happen many times to myself before I understood what was going on.
