Beginner's Luck (Looking good, feeling gorgeous)
    #4070528 - 04/18/05 09:37 PM (19 years, 2 days ago)

Just picked my first flush of my first batch. Total newbie, but I do my homework. This went amazingly well. Two pints and a quart of WBS, cased in 50/50 coir/verm. My babies are ready for the big time.

However, I think the fruits look small. Is this just the strain, or is it a fruiting conditions problem? The stems seem a bit thin, cap diameter was like 1-1.5 inches average. Either way, the flush was large, putting out a bit over 500 grams fresh. This site has been indispensable.

This image is large. For that I apologize. I'll be reducing all further stuff in the future, but because this is my first, I'm gonna attach it in its full glory.

Much love!
-Snail

well done, yo. i hope my first batch looks half that good!

Under his instruction, I taped drumsticks to his head and turned him into a sort of mummy, or perhaps a caterpiller in a cocoon. He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

That looks great. The size of the fruits of any given flush is related to (a) the number of pins set and (b) the depth of the substrate. The denser the flush and the more shallow the substrate, the smaller the average mushroom size. I can see you had a dense pin set, and I am betting that tray's substrate is about 1-2" deep, right? Those are the reasons for the smaller fruits. The good news is that lots of little fruits generally produce higher total yields than a tray with sparse big fruits. And that's not to mention they're a heck of a lot easier to dry. As the flushes progress, the size of the fruits can be expected to increase as the pin sets will be more and more sparse.

Just the genetics. Some women are tall, some are short, some blond, some brunette. Thicker substrate will get you thicker/bigger fruits but a strain change could too.

Bigger tray, more spawn, deeper substrate will get you bigger ones under good conditions

A different substrate (poo or compost) could help as well..

Very nice!~

You did your homework well!~

---

reason the fruits were small is you cased WBS.

work with some bulk substrates...then the mushrooms will get larger.

deeper substrate depths like 4" to 6" will help too.

take care!~
